Rules for transporting baggage at the airport. How much baggage can you carry on a plane for free?

Carry-on luggage on an airplane always raises many questions: what can you take into the cabin and what can’t? What is the maximum carry-on bag size and weight? What other requirements are there?

To answer these questions, I divided the article into two large blocks: the first contains an overview of the basic rules for carrying hand luggage, and the second contains a summary table with the conditions of specific airlines.

Rules for carrying hand luggage on an airplane

Classic airlines allow you to take checked baggage and hand luggage with you on your trip (at the cheapest fares, baggage may be for an additional fee, in business class you are allowed to carry twice as much). Low-cost airlines usually only allow hand luggage in the basic fare.

As a rule, its dimensions are as follows: 55 cm × 40 cm × 20 cm or 115 cm in the sum of three dimensions. These dimensions vary slightly between airlines, as does the weight allowance.

It is important that not all items can be taken in hand luggage; there are also restrictions - more about them below. It’s better to know everything in advance so as not to be upset when your favorite manicure set or heirloom knife is taken away from you.

What can and cannot be taken in hand luggage on a plane?

The list of permitted items in the aircraft cabin is usually the same for everyone; these rules are universal. Particular attention should be paid to liquids.

  • The volume of the liquid container should not exceed 100 ml.
  • In total, you are allowed to take no more than 1 liter of liquid in total in your hand luggage, that is, if you have 10 packages of 100 ml each, that’s approx. It is important that all these jars must be in resealable transparent packaging.
  • Security will ask you to present this liquid during security screening.

What can you take in hand luggage on a plane:

  • Electronics: laptop, tablet, camera, mobile phone, electric razor, hair dryer and other small equipment.
  • Hygiene products (safety (!) razor, toothbrush, shampoo, toothpaste, creams, varnishes, gels, balms - all up to 100 ml).
  • Musical instruments. It is better to check this point and all the nuances with the airline in advance.
  • Food in reasonable quantities. Nuts, fruits, vegetables, sweets, sandwiches, cakes and other solid foods. Yogurt, jam, honey, jam, soup - in packages of no more than 100 ml.
  • Drinks and alcohol in glass and plastic packaging no more than 100 ml.
  • You can take baby food in your hand luggage, within reasonable limits (the amount that will be needed during the flight).
  • Medicines. If you are carrying too much quantity or one that contains narcotic substances, you may require a prescription from a doctor.

What you cannot take in hand luggage:

  • Weapons or items that imitate weapons (including toys).
  • Gas cylinders, flammable liquids, including alcohol with a strength of more than 70%.
  • Knives.
  • Scissors.
  • All other piercing and cutting objects (manicure set, forks, knitting needles, syringes, straight razor, tools).
  • Sports equipment is most often not allowed to be carried in hand luggage, but you need to check with the specific airline.
  • Any liquids in packages larger than 100 ml.
  • Liquid food and drinks in packages larger than 100 ml (yogurt, honey, jam).

Almost all of this can be packed in your luggage. Any explosive, toxic or flammable liquids or weapons are prohibited from being carried on an airplane, including in luggage.

Small backpacks and suitcases are suitable for carry-on luggage - now they are specially made so that you can take them on board an airplane. Some airlines allow you to take, in addition to one piece of hand luggage, a laptop, a camera, a handbag, and a small stroller. But the Pobeda airline, on the contrary, allows you to carry only a handbag/briefcase/umbrella in the cabin of the plane - the rest of the things must be packed in 10 kg of luggage.

Carry-on luggage on an airplane - comparison table by airline

In addition to the basic rules that all airlines require you to follow, each has its own maximum size and weight of hand luggage, usually within 5-10 kg. These rules change frequently; before purchasing tickets, I recommend that you read the latest information on the official website of the airline you plan to fly with.

For example, my mother flew on an S7 from Tyumen to Kaliningrad for 6,000 rubles round trip when they just introduced a promotional fare without baggage. It seems to be very cheap, but they are very picky about the weight and size of hand luggage and force you to pay extra for any excess of the limits. And we flew on, and no one weighed the hand luggage, much less measured it, although they have requirements, and we tried to fulfill them.

Still, it is advisable to stay within the given limits, especially for flights on low-cost airlines.

Carry-on luggage on a plane? It is obvious that times are changing: flying without luggage, light, wearing only a backpack on your back is now a common and profitable thing. Therefore, probably, last fall, the order of the Ministry of Transport of Russia dated October 5, 2017 No. 409 changed some of the rules for air transportation.

Hand luggage and baggage: what you can take on a plane

Now, after Order No. 409 came into force, airplane passengers can take with them three types of luggage as such:

1. Hand luggage is transported in the aircraft cabin; its weight, dimensions and list are clearly specified in the air carrier’s rules.

Things that you want to take with you on board the plane should be packed in a backpack (or briefcase, or handbag) - the weight and dimensions are set by the carrier. Things needed during the flight can be packed separately - in a special bag or suitcase, the dimensions of which comply with the requirements of the carrier's rules. The main thing is to know how many pieces of hand luggage you can take on the plane. Usually this is 1 or 2 places.

According to the new rules, the backpack is no longer included in the permitted weight and dimensions of hand luggage, but is weighed separately at check-in or at the gate (weight and dimensions are controlled). Typically, the weight of a backpack with things in it should not exceed 3 - 5 kg, and the dimensions (the sum of three dimensions) should not exceed 75 cm.

However, some airlines interpret this point of the rules in their own way, classifying the weight and dimensions of a backpack as the weight and dimensions of hand luggage and thus reducing the passenger’s legal ability to transport some of the things in the aircraft cabin for free. There are other inconsistencies in the concept of “carry-on luggage”: the wording “backpack, briefcase and handbag”, “backpack” or briefcase, or lady's bag" - they bring confusion into the minds of passengers who cannot decide how to count hand luggage and how many items can be taken.

2. Items that you can also take with you on board the plane over the weight of hand luggage :

In addition to packed hand luggage, a passenger has the right to take into the aircraft cabin:

  • bouquet of flowers
  • outerwear, suit in a case (portmant)
  • baby food if flying with a child
  • a cradle (or baby stroller), if a child is being transported - the dimensions are set by the carrier; they must allow the cradle (stroller) to be safely placed in the cabin on a shelf under/above the seat
  • medications and certain dietary needs that the passenger may need during the flight
  • crutches (canes, walkers, folding wheelchairs, rollators) that the passenger needs and which can fit on the shelf under/above the seat
  • goods from the airport Duty Free store, packed in a sealed plastic bag - the dimensions are determined by the carrier (as a rule, its weight is no more than 3 kg, the dimensions in the sum of three dimensions do not exceed 75 cm)

3. Checked baggage that is carried in the hold of an aircraft.

Baggage can be free or paid.

In addition to free carry-on luggage (things that you can take with you on the plane), passengers can also carry free luggage (in the luggage compartment of the plane). Its weight must be within the limits established by the rules of the air carrier, but, as the Order states, not less than 10 kg per passenger. This condition applies if the air transportation agreement (read - the type of plane ticket purchased) provides for free baggage allowance.

However, here, too, each airline has its own standards: For some, free luggage as such does not exist in nature, you have to pay for everything; more some - free baggage weight includes hand luggage weight(it is also considered luggage).

Each airline has different free baggage allowance rules. For example, Aeroflot requires that checked baggage have dimensions of no more than 158 cm in the sum of three dimensions, this can be 1 or 2 pieces of luggage per 1 passenger (depending on the class of service/fare), the weight of 1 piece is no more than 23 kg( 32 kg - for business class).

If the air carrier's rules do not provide for free baggage allowance, you will have to pay for all baggage (except hand luggage).

As for paid luggage, its list is huge: there is recreational equipment, and our four-legged animal friends, and luggage in excess of a certain norm, which is established in the tariff, and oversized cargo, for which they charge several times more money than for regular cargo. .

Baggage or no luggage? Why has it become profitable to fly without luggage?

  1. If you don’t have any luggage (or the airline doesn’t have a standard for carrying a certain amount of luggage for free), and you only have hand luggage (+ things in your backpack, flowers for your loved one, a suit for going out, etc., see above) - you can purchase a baggage-free ticket: carriers offer them at rates much cheaper than if you bought a ticket with luggage. The economic benefits are obvious!
  2. There is no need to be nervous that something will be stolen from your suitcase in the luggage compartment, or, even worse, that your luggage will be lost altogether.
  3. A clear plus is the absence of heavy bags in your hands while traveling, which get in the way so much on the way.
  4. A baggage-free flight is disciplined - you will weigh the pros and cons ten times before taking anything with you on the road.
  5. Among the amenities established by the order is the obligation to return funds by the carrier if the actual weight of the luggage is less than that declared and paid for. Enjoy!

How much can hand luggage weigh?

What weight should hand luggage be so that you don’t have to pay extra for it? All according to the same order of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, the weight of the bag (with things) that can be taken for free is up to 5 kg. Plus, this includes excess weight: a backpack with things (check the weight and dimensions with the airline), a handbag (also worth checking) and things from the list above that can be taken in excess of the norm. The main thing is that the dimensions (dimensions) and weight of containers for transporting things (backpack, briefcase, bag) comply with the rules of the air carrier.

An ordinary scale and a seamstress' centimeter (or tape measure) will help you avoid getting into trouble before the flight: carefully measure the dimensions of your carry-on luggage and backpack (briefcase, bag), weigh it, and check it with the airline's rules. If possible, bring them into compliance with the requirements of the rules, otherwise you will have to pay extra for excess weight and dimensions.

What size hand luggage can you take on a plane?

What dimensions should hand luggage be when transported on an airplane? Almost all airlines, with the exception of only a few particularly picky ones, require that bags or suitcases that are taken into the aircraft cabin as hand luggage have dimensions of 55x40x20 cm, the sum of three dimensions (you need to add up all the numbers) - 115 cm.

There are also requirements for backpacks: as a rule, a backpack (with packed items) should not weigh more than 3 - 5 kg, and its dimensions should not exceed 75 cm in the sum of three dimensions.

How to fit into sizes so as not to pay extra:

  1. For hand luggage, you should use a soft bag or backpack that has straps - this way you can reduce the dimensions to the required size.
  2. A bag (backpack) should not be bulky - large sizes always puzzle airport inspectors: they will want to weigh and check the dimensions of your hand luggage in a special frame installed at the airport.

Currently, the light industry specially produces bags for flights that have dimensions that meet the requirements for the sizes (dimensions) of hand luggage:

  • 55 x 40 x 20 cm
  • 36 x 30 x 27 cm

If you use a suitcase to pack your hand luggage, its dimensions should be the same: 55 x 40 x 20 cm.

Backpack size for hand luggage (airline requirement s7): the sum of three dimensions must not exceed 75 cm.

Dimensions and weight of hand luggage for Russian airlines

"Pobeda": hand luggage and luggage

What is the weight and size of hand luggage in Pobeda? The airline flies from Vnukovo to the Turkish resort cities of Alanya, Antalya, and to European cities: Baden-Baden, Girona, Venice, Berlin, Bratislava, Vienna, etc. Maximum total dimensions of hand luggage and items( attention! until February 18, 2019) should not exceed 36 x 30 x 2 7 cm (total size of all items). There are no restrictions on the number and weight of hand luggage, but must fit freely into the calibrator installed at the airport. Pobeda does not have free luggage at all (except for hand luggage), you have to pay for everything.

From February 18, 2019, Pobeda introduces new rules for carrying hand luggage, but the old ones continue to operate as an alternative option for those who are already accustomed to them.

On your ticket/passenger receipt, pay attention to the entry: 1PC/2PC/3PC - this is how the airline indicates the number of pieces of free checked baggage.

Hello friends. Today is important news. After November 5, 2017, new rules for the carriage of baggage and hand luggage on flights of Russian airlines come into force. If previously each carrier had its own requirements, now the rules will be the same for all Russian airlines (except for the low-cost carrier Pobeda).

Attention! Once again: the law is only for Russian airlines. All other airlines have their own rules that comply with the laws of their state.

The rules to which airlines and we, airplane passengers, are subject are called “General Rules for the Air Transportation of Passengers, Baggage, Cargo and Requirements for the Service of Passengers, Shippers, and Consignees.” They were adopted on June 28, 2007 by order of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation. Since then, the rules have been amended. But the norms were very different and vague. For some carriers they were generally too rigid.

On October 5, 2017, a new law No. 409 was issued amending the document. The changes affect everyone who uses air transport, i.e. and you and me.

It is clear that the law has many interesting details that we will not talk about. Today we will talk about the most important thing, what everyone who wants to take a flight with a Russian airline will face.

Let's agree on terms

  1. Baggage - suitcases, bags or boxes that we weigh at check-in and check in as baggage.
  2. Carry-on luggage is things packed into a bag, briefcase, backpack or package that we take with us into the aircraft cabin and on which the “carry-on luggage” tag is hung.
  3. Things that we take into the cabin of the plane and that do not have a tag attached to them. (Laptops, cameras, gadgets, clothes, flowers, baby food, crutches, canes, etc.)

There are many interesting details in the law that we will not talk about. And we will only tell you about the most important thing, about what an ordinary tourist who wants to take a flight with the help of a Russian airline will encounter.

The law comes into force on November 5, 2017. This means that everyone who purchases air tickets after November 5 is subject to these amendments.

The law does not apply to those who have already purchased tickets in advance (before November 5). This is what is written in the same rules.

The most important things about the new flight rules

General requirements that are important to us as travelers relate to baggage allowances and the carriage of items in the aircraft cabin. Let’s try to clearly explain these rules so that you don’t have any questions and understand what our pros and cons are.

Baggage requirements

Earlier: the maximum weight of one piece of luggage should not exceed 32 kg.

Now: a new requirement has been introduced - the weight limit for 1 piece of baggage is 30 kg for all air carriers. Less is possible, more is not possible.

1 piece of luggage is one suitcase. If you are checking in a large backpack, then this is 1 backpack, if you are checking in a bag, then this is 1 bag.

But! This does not mean that now you can take 30 kg of luggage on any ticket. There is an important point here; it depends on what fare ticket you bought. Simply put, an economy class ticket has fewer options than those who took, for example, a business class ticket.

All luggage can be broken down by weight:

  • Up to 10 kg, from 10 kg to 30 kg, over 30 kg
  • Baggage up to 10 kg is free

Previously, the weight allowance for free luggage was different for different companies, but now it is the same for everyone.

This means that no company can write in its rules: “It is allowed to carry luggage weighing no more than 3 kg (or 6 kg or 7 kg).” The norm is 10 kg for everyone! You yourself are not required to gain exactly 10 kg, you can take less at your discretion, but the company cannot set you a lower luggage weight limit.

Luggage weighing from 10 to 30 kg

There are some nuances here. As before, you need to go to the carrier’s website and read its rules - what weight your luggage should be in accordance with the tariff of your ticket. This means that “the upper limit can be 23 kg, 25, 27 to 30 kg. If the company rules for your tariff indicate an upper limit of 23 kg (that is, you can carry no more than 23 kg for free), and when weighing If your suitcase at check-in was overweight, then you either need to take something out and leave it, or pay extra for the excess.

Excess baggage

Baggage that is not included in the price of your fare ticket is considered excess baggage.

Example: you bought a ticket Moscow-Vladivostok"Economy flexible" tariff. The ticket price includes baggage allowance weighing up to 23 kg. If your luggage weighs more than 23 kg, but does not exceed 30 kg, then this weight is considered excess and you will have to pay extra for it.

Find out how much it will cost on the airline's website.

Baggage weighing 30 kg

Typically, a passenger who has purchased a business class ticket can carry this much for free. With this fare, the passenger has more options.

Baggage over 30 kg - Heavy luggage

Anything over 30 kg that does not fit standard dimensions is considered heavy cargo. Additional payment for each kilogram is at a special rate for “heavy load”. Each company has its own tariffs. Read the rules on the company’s website (section “Baggage Transportation”). This is required information.

Perhaps this is the main thing.

Baggage free ticket

Let me add that many companies still have a baggage-free tariff. This is when you don’t take any luggage at all and fly only with hand luggage. Tickets are cheap, but there are inconvenient nuances. The main one is that such a ticket is non-refundable.

Consolidated baggage

It is also possible to combine the belongings of two or more travelers into one piece of luggage (put all items in one suitcase - 1 piece of luggage). The weight of such luggage should also not exceed the same 30 kg.

What are the pros and cons that we have in connection with the introduction of the amendments?

Pros: Standard standards have emerged for everyone. The main one is that you can take free luggage weighing up to 10 kg. Here the norm has increased and we feel better.

Minuses: maximum luggage weight limit: instead of 32 kg, you can now take luggage weighing no more than 30 kg

Friends, now we are in Telegram: our channel about Europe, our channel about Asia. Welcome)

Hand luggage - new norms

Earlier: Different airlines had their own requirements. For example, for some: you can take no more than 3 kg in hand luggage, for others - no more than 4, for others - no more than 5 kg, and for some up to 10 kg.

Now: The hand luggage allowance for all carriers is at least 5 kg per passenger. For us this means: we can take less than 5 kg, but carry-on luggage is prohibited above this weight. At the same time, the carrier can change this figure upward at its own discretion. Those. You still need to read the rules, because... some companies may set a limit of 6, 7 kg per person or even 10 kg, which, of course, will please us.

Also, be aware of the dimensions! Those. your hand luggage must fit not only into weight standards, but also into size (length, width, height). Dimensions standards, as before, need to be found on the carrier’s website. There are no changes here.

Earlier: we could check in hand luggage and, in addition to it, carry laptops, cameras and cameras on the plane for free.

Now: All this is included in hand luggage.

In other words, you cannot transport separately:

  • telephones;
  • laptops;
  • cameras;
  • documents in folders;

You'll have to put them in your bags. Their weight is also taken into account when calculating the weight of hand luggage.

Is your laptop in your bag or suitcase? You don't need to pay anything extra. Do you want to carry it separately? You are due.

If previously hand luggage was weighed only at check-in, now it can be weighed before boarding (apparently in cases where the bag is suspicious). This is important for those who took few things with them, checked them in as hand luggage, and bought “baggage-free” tickets.

Attention! Your hand luggage can be weighed at the port of arrival!

Minuses this innovation: now at home you will have to carefully weigh your hand luggage and make sure that there is no excess.

Pros: The aircraft cabin will be less crowded. All your hand luggage will fit into the luggage compartment in the aircraft cabin and you don’t need to worry whether there is enough space for your things on the shelf or not.

Updated 19.02. 2018: Due to increasing passenger complaints about the lack of space for hand luggage in the aircraft cabin, Aeroflot has tightened control over the carriage of hand luggage. You can read about it Here.

What things can you take on board the plane without having to check them in as hand luggage?

Both before and now you can take with you things you need during the flight or immediately after landing. They are not checked in as hand luggage and do not require additional payment.

Here is a list of them. The list will be supplemented, but definitely will not be able to be cut:

  • handbag, backpack, briefcase;
  • bouquet of flowers;
  • your clothes (jacket, coat); If we fly from a country where it’s +27 degrees in our winter, where it’s -27. Or vice versa, such an additional package with things is very relevant.
  • special children's food; But no more than is needed for the flight.
  • specially packaged suit;
  • cane or crutch;
  • a baby stroller or cradle, which, when folded, fits under the seat of the chair in front;
  • walkers, which, when folded, fit under the seat of the chair in front;
  • medical chair for those who have difficulty moving.

Are the positions familiar? They were previously allowed to be carried free of charge. Now the list has been expanded:

  • sealed bag from dutyfree;
  • medications, everything necessary for medical reasons for the passenger.

And once again, what is now prohibited from being transported separately:

  • phone, laptop;
  • an umbrella, even a small one;
  • papers in a folder;
  • newspapers, books, magazines;
  • camera, camera.

What are the pros and cons of all this?

Pros: The minimum weight limit for hand luggage has increased to 5 kg.

Minuses: The maximum weight requirements for hand luggage have been reduced from 10 to 5 kg. Laptops, cameras, documents will have to be counted as hand luggage.

I think we will get used to the new normal and figure something out. Other countries already have experience; you can use their life hacks.

Video - How the Scots pack things in a special vest

There are people who figure out how to carry more things in the cabin of the plane and not pay for it. One option is an airline passenger vest. Interesting idea.

Common Questions

What happens if I refuse payment?

Refusing to pay for something that you can no longer carry for free? For example, a laptop. Everything is simple here - you may not be allowed on board. They will, of course, tell you about this. And they will give you a second chance to pay. But we don’t recommend taking risks - they will simply cancel your ticket if you insist.

You paid more than you brought. What to do?

Only if you overpay for the number of seats will you get your money back. If you paid for 2 seats, but only used one, you will be refunded.

Hand luggage weighs more than allowed. Is it possible to pay extra?

No! This is a question of passenger safety. If it doesn’t fit in the weight and dimensions, you won’t be allowed to carry it with you.

If the carrier does not follow the new rules

These innovations are relevant for everyone. If you see that they are being violated, you can contact Rospotrebnadzor. To do this, you need to save all the tickets and receipts you receive. Don't pay extra without a receipt! You may receive compensation, but the carrier will be fined.

The rules have changed, perhaps something has become less convenient for us. But, if you think about it, you can find the right “luggage combination”!

This is probably all of the main things. If you still have questions regarding the nuances (oversized cargo, baggage consolidation, refund, etc.), we highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with rules(study changes in the order “General rules for air transportation of passengers, baggage, cargo and requirements for servicing passengers, shippers, consignees”) and deal with your specific case. There are a lot of errors and misleading information on the websites and even in the CT video. Use the original!

Our "Victory"

Pobeda Airlines is a subsidiary of Aeroflot and positions itself as low-cost.

In Russia, today, this is the only low-cost company, so its requirements are slightly different in the direction of minimalism.

Assume that the essence of low-cost airlines is to reduce the price of a ticket as much as possible, i.e. make it cheap, then the rules of Victory will become more clear to you.

Low-cost airlines (from the English “low-cost” - low costs) are a type of airline that operates on an unconventional transportation model, which involves providing very cheap air tickets.

Flying by plane is a very fast and convenient way to get to the right place in a short period of time. But to make air travel safe and comfortable, air carriers have developed a number of rules that must be followed strictly.

The basic rules for carrying baggage on an airplane are common to all airlines. In addition, airlines have individual conditions for baggage transportation. They depend on the country of arrival and the class of boarding ticket. To avoid any unpleasant surprises during check-in, a person should find out in advance how much baggage can be carried on the plane.

On November 5, 2017, the order of the Russian Ministry of Transport regarding the transportation of baggage on airlines in a new edition came into force. It defines the concept (weight limit) and piece concept (quantitative limit of carried pieces of luggage). There are three types of baggage rates: non-refundable without free baggage allowance and with baggage allowance, and returnable with baggage allowance.

Terminal

On a note! In civil aviation, free or paid transportation of items is determined by their dimensions (size and weight), as well as the flight range of the aircraft and cabin class. The ticket price includes baggage, which is determined by the generally accepted weight limit system. They are designated as weight.

Carriage allowance by weight

As for weight indicators, the new regulations determine the list of baggage with permissible weight in the aircraft cabin, as well as in its cargo compartment. The restrictions were introduced due to the specifics of the air movement of people. The technical characteristics of airships, compared to trains, provide for a smaller amount of transported cargo.

The new regulations set the maximum weight of free hand luggage per passenger for non-refundable tickets at 5 kg. Some carriers may increase this figure for the sake of competitive advantage. And on some airlines, restrictions have become stricter. So, in 2018, Aeroflot adjusted the rules for baggage transportation. What weight of baggage is allowed on planes of leading Russian airlines?

You can take onboard Aeroflot for free in your hand luggage:

  • One seat, the size of which is 55x40x25 centimeters and weighs 10 kilograms in economy and comfort classes and 15 kilograms in business class.
  • A backpack weighing 5 kilograms and 80 centimeters in the sum of 3 dimensions, a handbag or briefcase.
  • A duty-free package, outerwear, a suit in a case, a folding baby stroller or wheelchair for the disabled, medical supplies, etc.

Important! According to air travel rules, if baggage weighs more than 20 kg, passengers with return tickets have the right to carry from 10 to 30 kg of baggage without additional payments.

According to this system, the following indicators are provided for adults and children at least 2 years old:

  • 1st class – permissible weight 40 kg.
  • Business class – 30 kg.
  • Economy class – 20 kg.

According to the rules of air transportation, if the weight of baggage is more than 20 kg, the passenger will be required to pay extra for it if the flight is carried out at an economy fare.

Luggage in the cabin

Note! Each child under 2 years of age without a separate seat is entitled to a free baggage allowance of 10 kg.

Many international airlines allow you to take a personal item (an oversized handbag, a laptop or a camera packed in a case) as part of your carry-on luggage. In addition, carriers may allow the carriage of an umbrella, outerwear and duty-free bags.

Local transportation norm

Most airlines have adopted a piecemeal (according to the number of seats) baggage system. The piece system is differentiated depending on the class of service and/or type of tariff applied. This can be a suitcase, backpack, bag or regular bag - it is important that hand luggage fully corresponds to the size of 55x40x25 cm.

Below are the baggage allowances for several leading airlines in economy class:

AirlineDimensionsWeight
Aeroflot55 x 40 x 25 cm.10 kg.
S7 Airlines (“Siberia”)55 x 40 x 20 cm.10 kg.
"UTair"55 x 40 x 20 cm.Economy class - 10 kg, economy comfort - 2 pieces of 10 kg each
"Ural Airlines"55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg.
"Victory"36 x 30 x 27 cm.No limits
Nordwind55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg.
Red Wings55 x 40 x 20 cm.Base and Light tariffs - 10 kg, Standard tariff - 5 kg
Turkish Airlines55 x 40 x 23 cm.8 kg.
Lufthansa55 x 40 x 23 cm.8 kg.
NordStar Airlines55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg.
"Yamal"55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg.
Aegean Airlines56 x 45 x 25 cm.8 kg.

Summarizing the above, we can say that the permissible size of hand luggage for economy class is 158 cm, and for 1st and business class – 203 cm.

Oversized luggage. Kinds. Transport rules and regulations

Oversized baggage can be carried by agreement with the air carrier. The conditions will be announced to the passenger at the stage of booking the ticket. If oversized cargo is transported in the aircraft cabin, then the person will need to purchase a separate boarding pass for it.

Limitation: weight per seat cannot exceed 75 kg. If the weight nevertheless exceeds this limit, then so many tickets are purchased so that their number is a multiple of the ratio of its weight and the norm of permissible transportation; loading and unloading of luggage for a flight of any distance and complexity is carried out at the expense of the airline.

Carriage of fragile luggage

To be able to transport fragile luggage safely, it makes sense to take it with you into the cabin. But this issue also has its limitations:

  • The dimensions of the box, bag or suitcase must be no more than 55x40x20 centimeters (115 centimeters in the sum of the length, width and height measurements).
  • Many airlines do not accept items longer than 60 centimeters (except the tube) in hand luggage.
  • According to the standards of most air carriers, the weight of cargo should not exceed 5-10 kg.

If the luggage is fragile but large (for example, musical instruments), then a separate seat is purchased for it.

Important! Discounts and bonuses from airlines do not apply to the transportation of fragile luggage.

Fragile cargo can also be checked into the baggage compartment of the aircraft. In agreement with airline representatives, it will be marked with a special tag.

List of baggage restrictions and prohibitions

In order to ensure flight safety, baggage rules prohibit the carriage of a number of items and substances on passenger aircraft. These include all types of weapons and their imitation. Stabbing and cutting objects (knives, knitting needles, scissors, etc.). Explosive substances (gasoline, gunpowder, aerosols). Alcohol with an alcohol content of more than 24%.

Also, small personal vehicles are prohibited unless their lithium battery is removed. The transportation of many medications, etc. is restricted.

To avoid troubles during pre-flight inspection, you need to familiarize yourself with the full list of restrictions and prohibitions when carrying baggage. This data can be viewed on the websites of any air carrier.

New rules for baggage transportation. Actual information

New rules for carrying baggage on an airplane, which came into force on November 5, 2017, combined the requirements of all Russian air carriers, except for the low-cost carrier Pobeda. This is the first airline to provide services at low prices.

For example, on some airlines it was previously possible to take up to 32 kg of luggage on a long-distance flight, but after the decree, only 30 kg per piece. 1 piece of luggage is one suitcase, or one bag or one backpack. There has been an increase in the carry-on baggage allowance to 10 kg.

There have been no changes to cargo size standards. They are determined individually by the carrier.

All changes can be viewed in detail on the website of the airline of interest.

Your air luggage will arrive safely at your arrival point if you follow some tips from experienced travelers:

  • To avoid damage to your cargo during transportation and not create problems with the transportation of neighboring luggage, you need to make sure that your bags and suitcases are in good condition. They must close tightly and have no cracks or cracks. You can additionally pack things in cellophane. This inexpensive service exists at almost every airport.
  • If the weight of baggage or hand luggage exceeds the individually established standards for a particular carrier, then you will have to pay extra for the extra kilos.
  • You can put things in the bag on either side, but if the wheels or handle stick out, you will have to check it in as checked luggage (if you exceed the limit, you will need to pay extra). The check is carried out at the check-in counter, before passport control and before the boarding gate.
  • You can add a laptop or other large gadgets to your basic free carry-on luggage if you put them in a backpack (up to 80 cm in size), briefcase or handbag.
  • For transporting liquids (gels, aerosols, shampoos), a container with a volume of no more than 100 ml is suitable. No other container will be allowed on board. All containers up to 100 ml must be packed in a transparent resealable bag measuring 20x20 cm. The norm is one bag per passenger. You shouldn’t hide it too deeply, as you will have to present it during security at the airport.
  • It is important to know which countries do not allow certain items to be carried on board an aircraft. For example, in some Islamic countries the transportation of attributes of a religious nature is strictly prohibited.

Loading

Carrying baggage on an airplane is subject to new rules, which are prescribed to ensure greater safety, first of all, for the passengers themselves. Therefore, it is worth understanding some restrictions. Air carrier information services will provide comprehensive information about what you can and cannot take with you on a flight.

— guarantee of a smooth trip, no additional payments and safety of personal belongings.

During a business trip or vacation, it is permissible to check in a travel accessory in the luggage compartment or take it into the aircraft cabin and save time at customs control. To avoid unpleasant surprises during your trip, it is important to carefully study baggage allowances at airlines, take into account the selection rules and find the optimal size model.

What to consider when choosing a travel accessory?

If you decide to buy a suitcase for travel, pay attention to factors that will help you decide on the type of model:

  • Number of travelers. Spacious accessories are optimal for a family vacation, and small bags and backpacks are ideal for traveling alone.
  • Owner's age. For young travelers, it is better to choose special children's accessories that are characterized by minimal weight, small size and handle length. As a rule, such models are easy to recognize by their colorful designs or images of cartoon characters.
  • Duration of the trip. If you have a long trip or business trip, choose a large or medium model of a travel accessory.

Before choosing a travel bag, you should decide how to transport your luggage. If you have a small number of items, it is permissible to take the accessory on board the aircraft if the dimensions comply with air transportation standards. Read the list of permitted and prohibited items in advance to avoid getting into an awkward situation during control. In other cases, you need to hand over your items to the luggage compartment.

Maximum external dimensions and weight of baggage allowed for economy class

RUSSIAN AIRLINES MAX. DIMENSIONS MAX. WEIGHT
Aeroflot 55x40x20 cm 10 kg
Russia 55x40x20 cm 10 kg
S7 Airlines 55x40x20 cm 10 kg
Ural Airlines 55x40x20 cm 5 kg
Utair 55x40x20 cm 10 kg
Victory 36x30x27 cm 5 kg
Nordwind Airlines 55x40x20 cm 5 kg
Red Wings Airlines 55x40x20 cm 5 kg
Nordstar 55x40x20 cm 5 kg

According to the rules of air passenger transportation, each airline sets the permissible size of a bag in hand luggage and the weight of a suitcase that is checked into the luggage compartment.

If you plan to take a large number of things on a trip, you should not transport your bag in the cabin. For transportation, it is advisable to choose an accessory of suitable volume:

  • large, with a volume of over 70 l and a height of 70 cm;
  • medium, volume from 25 l and height up to 65-70 cm;
  • small, with a volume of up to 25 liters and a height not exceeding 65 cm.

When choosing a bag or suitcase, it is important to choose the optimal dimensions. If there is free space, clothes will take on an unsightly appearance, and if the suitcase is too small, you will not be able to take all the necessary things.

Please note that you must choose travel accessories in Moscow taking into account transportation rules. The weight of one baggage should not exceed 32 kg per piece, while the norm for 1 passenger is 20-23 kg and depends on the carrying capacity of the aircraft, airline rules and flight class.

If, during check-in for a flight, airport staff discover an excess, the passenger will be asked to pay a fee according to the established tariff or remove things from the suitcase. Compliance with weight and size restrictions is necessary for the safety of passengers, so carriers carefully check the dimensions of luggage before departure.

Rules for choosing large and medium suitcases

Once you have determined the acceptable dimensions for your suitcase, it is important to choose the right model. For accessories of large and medium sizes, the material of manufacture and the quality of the fittings are especially important due to the increased load on the body and axle.

To ensure the safety of things, use these simple tips:

  • choose models made of high-quality plastic, which will protect fragile items and withstand the weight of luggage, or durable textiles;
  • pay attention to the handle mechanism, individual wheel mounts and axle strength;
  • check zippers and security system.

    When choosing textile products, give preference to models with additional compartments to increase volume and special belts that will ensure the safety of your luggage.

To find out how to choose a travel bag in Moscow or a large suitcase for a family trip, use the services of professional consultants who provide brand stores free of charge.

Dimensions of carry-on accessories

In accordance with air travel regulations, the permissible dimensions of hand luggage on an airplane are 55x40x20 cm or 115 cm in total. Compliance with the dimensions allows the accessory to be stored on the upper shelf of the cabin, which is necessary to ensure the safety of passengers.

To check whether hand luggage in the aircraft cabin meets the established standards, some airports offer passengers the opportunity to use measurement offices.

If you decide to carry luggage in the cabin, the weight of the bag should not exceed 5-10 kg. Airline standards are set individually depending on the flight class and accommodation options.

Suitable for hand luggage:

  • small suitcases;
  • shoulder bag with two handles;
  • practical backpack;
  • beauty case;
  • pilot case and portable bag.

As a rule, manufacturers indicate the dimensions of a suitcase as hand luggage along with the name of the material and other characteristics.

To avoid unpleasant situations during a flight, it is important to take into account not only the size of the hand luggage bag, but also the list of items that are allowed on board the aircraft. If there are aerosols, manicure accessories or liquids with a volume of more than 100 ml, customs officers will ask passengers to dispose of the items in a special container.

It is advisable to purchase hand luggage bags from reliable online stores that are ready to offer a wide range of quality products. Prompt delivery throughout Moscow and the regions will allow you to receive the ordered goods and comfortably go on a trip or business trip.
