The name of the oldest Russian tourism company initially sounded like this: the state joint-stock company for foreign tourism in the USSR “Intourist”. However, later it changed several times. "Intourist" began its activities in the Soviet Union, in 1929. This means that in 2019 it will mark exactly 90 years since its opening.

Since its founding, during the Soviet era, the oldest Russian travel company did not have its own material base. In 1993, in order to develop tourism, it was merged with the All-Union Joint Stock Company "Hotel". As a result of the merger, the company received transport, restaurant and hotel chains. This was a huge leap in development.

Rapid growth

In the 1930s, the material base of Intourist began its active growth. The company had at its disposal more than 20 hotels and about the same number of restaurants, as well as about 300 vehicles, for which a separate garage was built in 1934. Now this building is known as the Intourist Garage. It is an architectural monument of Soviet times.

If at the beginning of the 30s the cash turnover of Intourist was about 50 million rubles, then by the 1940s it doubled and reached almost 100 million. Along with the cash turnover, the staff also grew. In six years it has increased by almost 6,000 people. Therefore, the 30s can be considered significant for the oldest Russian travel company.

Reorganization in 1990

By 1990, Intourist had 107 tourism enterprises and more than fifty thousand jobs. In 1990 alone, the enterprise received more than 2,000,000 tourists from different countries, and its income amounted to more than 700 million US dollars. In the same year 90, the company underwent reorganization. Its controlling stake was purchased by the joint-stock financial corporation Sistema. The oldest Russian travel company acquired a new name, which was abbreviated as VAO Intourist.

During the Soviet era, the company was the main tourism operator receiving guests from other countries. It was thanks to Intourist that many famous personalities visited the Soviet Union, from artists and writers to politicians and public figures.

Intourist is the oldest Soviet and Russian travel company. Full name: Open Joint Stock Company “Foreign Economic Joint Stock Company for Tourism and Investment “Intourist””. The headquarters is located in Moscow.

The company was founded on April 12, 1929. The State Joint Stock Company (GAO) for foreign tourism in the USSR “Intourist” initially did not have its own material resources.

To develop tourism, in 1933, the state joint-stock company for foreign tourism in the USSR “Intourist” was merged with the All-Union Joint-Stock Company “Hotel” and received at its disposal a chain of hotels, restaurants and vehicles. The authorized capital of the company during this period was 35 million rubles.

The growing material base of Intourist every year necessitated the construction of a separate garage for the vehicles of the all-Union society. In 1934, according to the design of the architect Konstantin Melnikov, in collaboration with the architect V.I. Kurochkin, a garage was built for Intourist cars on Sushchevsky Val in Moscow, currently known as the Intourist garage.

Intourist had 27 hotels (2,778 rooms) and 26 restaurants. Motor transport consisted of 334 vehicles, 85% of which were domestically produced. If the turnover of all Intourist enterprises in 1932 was 48 million rubles, then in 1938 it was 98 million rubles.

By 1990, Intourist had emerged as an independent sector of the country's economy. It had 107 tourist enterprises with 54 thousand places. This year, more than 2 million foreign tourists were received, tourism income amounted to 700 million US dollars. In July 1990, the company was reorganized. A controlling stake was acquired by AFK Sistema. The company was renamed Foreign Economic Joint-Stock Company for Tourism and Investment "Intourist". Major owners of VAO Intourist were also the Moscow Government and State Joint-Stock Company "Moscow", which was engaged in the development of the capital's tourism potential.

In March 2006, the company acquired most of the 20 percent stake in the Cosmos Hotel, which was put up for a special auction at the initiative of the Moscow Property Department. The company immediately became the hotel's majority shareholder, owning approximately 64% of the hotel's shares.

In 2007, the Intourist company began consolidating tour operator assets within the framework of OJSC National Travel Company Intourist (tour operating division). "NTK Intourist" combines the resources of the three largest tour operators in Russia: "Intourist", "Skyway" and "Riviera".

On January 19, 2008, VAO Intourist acquired 74% of RossTour (Ural region). At first, RossTour will operate under its own brand, after which it will gradually move under the Intourist brand.

The owners of the company as of December 31, 2008 are AFK Sistema (66.2%), Bank of Moscow (25%, nominal holder), OJSC GAO Moscow (8.8%).

In November 2010, it was announced the creation of a joint venture between Intourist and the famous British travel company Thomas Cook. The Russian company will contribute its tour operator and sales business to the joint venture, and the British company will contribute $45 million. Thomas Cook also received an option to buy out Intourist’s share in the joint venture within five years.

In March 2011, the management structure was reorganized through the merger of two management companies OJSC VAO Intourist and OJSC Intourist Hotel Group.

On April 1, 2011, employees of OJSC Intourist Hotel Group joined the staff of the parent company of the holding, OJSC VAO Intourist, continuing to carry out management functions of the hotel chain under the Intourist Hotel Group brand.
