Russian autumn can be wonderful- with warm days of Indian summer, golden leaves, the aroma of late apples in the garden and the strong smell of mushrooms in the forest. But sometimes it happens that cold, fine rain falls continuously, the sun does not appear from behind the clouds for weeks, and it is so cold that there is no desire to go outside. This is where the idea comes to go, at least for a while, somewhere where autumn is pleasant and sunny, and it doesn’t rain every day. The good news is that you don’t have to fly to the tropics for this - there are such places nearby, including in Europe. Not all of them are in the Mediterranean; there are other options.
Generally speaking, you still need to look for a warm and dry autumn closer to the south. Autumn in Scandinavia is incredibly beautiful, but the weather here is the same as in Russia: depending on your luck, it most often rains at this time, and in November the first snow may appear. European countries with a temperate climate remain warm until the end of September, then in most of them it begins to rain, usually daily. But in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean the weather is uneven: it is warm almost everywhere until November, but in many cities up to fifty percent of the annual precipitation falls in one autumn month - however, there are exceptions to the rules.
Limassol
The sunniest option. It's not just warm here in September - it's hot here and the beach season continues. The sun at this time is softer than in summer - it’s harder to get sunburnt, and you can swim as much as you like to your heart’s content. In September there are hot days and warm evenings. At the end of October, the water and air temperatures drop, but some people swim until November; fortunately, both October and November are usually not cold (even at the end of November it can be quite comfortable outside in a light sweater or windbreaker).
People often go to Limassol for a beach holiday, but in the fall, when the heat subsides, you don’t have to limit yourself to it: at this time it is especially pleasant to wander for a long time around the old part of the city, where it is incredibly hot in the summer, or you can take one of the official routes for travelers. There are many of them around Limassol: there are natural ones through mountains and forests, there are wine routes through vineyards, there are sports, cultural and architectural routes - all very picturesque. You can also take part in the wine festival, the largest on the island - it takes place in early September.
Thessaloniki
The Greek city of Thessaloniki is also warm in the fall, and you can swim here until October. Sunny but not hot weather makes it possible to take a good look at the many sights of the city, and there really are a lot of them.
Thessaloniki was founded in the fourth century BC, so there are monuments from all eras of the last two and a half thousand years - Roman ruins, medieval walls, palaces of the nobility of later times - but the UNESCO World Heritage List includes monuments from the early Christian and Byzantine eras . These are the gates, the monastery, as well as cathedrals, basilicas and churches, built between the fourth and fourteenth centuries. Many of them are amazingly preserved - right down to the frescoes - and are still working. The buildings are scattered over a large area, the city is very hilly, so, perhaps, it is much more convenient to see it in the fall than in the summer - it is not so hot.
In addition, it is pleasant: ancient churches entwined with grapes, narrow streets filled with ripe chestnuts - the old quarters are unusually beautiful at this time. In autumn, Thessaloniki hosts many festivals associated with the harvest: at this time, grapes, pomegranates ripen here, and by November - olives. You can also get acquainted with seasonal local cuisine without paying twice as much for it as in the summer, which is also nice.
Barcelona
Here in September the summer heat disappears, but it is quite hot, and the sea has not yet cooled down. You can sunbathe, swim too - the water is very pleasant. An additional joy is that you can travel through the surrounding natural parks: at this time the leaves turn yellow and the forest-covered mountains acquire a special beauty. And it’s worth looking at Barcelona itself “in gold” - framed by autumn, Gaudi’s masterpieces seem to become even brighter.
There are many attractions in Barcelona and in addition to the works of the most famous local architect included in the UNESCO World Heritage List: monasteries, palaces and churches, there are also several excellent museums, of which the Picasso Museum is perhaps the most impressive. Barcelona cannot be called a cheap city, and the high season here ends late - at the end of October, but in October the city still has lower prices and fewer tourists than in summer. At this time, you can see how the locals really live, experience their leisurely rhythm of life, and wandering the streets without the dense summer crowd is a different story.
Plovdiv
Bulgarian Plovdiv also acquires additional expressiveness in the fall. This is one of the oldest cities in Europe; there are remains of Roman buildings (including a theater, forum and stadium), medieval streets, and ancient churches. It is colder here than in the Mediterranean, but it is clear, sunny and there is a real golden autumn with piles of dazzling yellow leaves on the streets. A slight coolness only adds charm and adds vivacity.
In such weather, it’s good to get into the most picturesque part of the city - the one within the old city walls, on the hills, which during this season seems even more cozy than usual. Finding this place is very easy - it is a tangle of ancient alleys between the ethnographic museum and Tsar Boris III Boulevard. The streets here are filled with terraced houses of the 18th century, very bizarre: the buildings rise in strangely shaped steps above each other, two-hundred-year-old support beams protrude from everywhere, in some places there are paintings on the walls, and the streets are paved in a generally medieval style. Unlike fashionable Barcelona, in Plovdiv at this time prices, already low, are greatly reduced, and space is added, which is already not in short supply - hotels and restaurants are half empty.
Budapest
If you want to go not to the sea, but somewhere deeper, then you can choose Budapest. The Hungarian capital is famous for its historical monuments along the banks of the Danube, and in its center, it seems, all architectural styles are collected at once. It is noteworthy that this does not make the city chaotic: it easily combines the severity of Gothic, the grace of Baroque, and imperial splendor. The nicest area is around Buda Castle with its crooked medieval streets and houses that are four hundred years old, but there is a lot to see in Budapest beyond that. The city is colorful and unique, and it is also very well (even unexpectedly well) preserved.
Budapest has a long, dry autumn with sunny days and pleasantly cool evenings. September here is similar to Russian August - soft sun and an abundance of fruits. In September, golden autumn begins here and the high season ends. So, it will be especially pleasant to spend the day in one of the parks on the banks of the Danube, admiring the river banks painted in all shades of green, yellow and red. In the fall, Budapest hosts many large city events, and all of them have a variety of food options: a foie gras festival (yes, it is made not only in France, and this delicacy is much cheaper here), a chocolate festival, wine and cheese festivals, and for those who want to eat tokay -tours.
Prague
Prague is rarely chosen for autumn tourism, but in vain - this season here is much drier than in Russia. It’s usually not hot here, but quite comfortable in a light jacket, nature pleases with a clear sky, the local cuisine is simply created for cooler weather, and you’ve probably already heard about the abundance of attractions in this city. Founded in the 8th century, Prague is superbly preserved: the medieval center, the famous Vysehrad fortress, even more famous bridges - and a mass of individual buildings of all existing architectural styles or combining several styles at once (this often happens here), which make the city completely incomparable similar.
Fans of medieval architecture will find a lot of interesting things, but the matter is not limited to antiquities. Sometimes Prague is called an “open-air Art Deco museum,” and this is absolutely true: there are also a lot of buildings of the late 19th - early 20th centuries in the center, each one is unique, and it’s impossible to describe how it looks in combination with everything else. There are a lot of trees in the city, and October is incredibly good here: warm, clear, and at this time of year Prague is truly golden. Additionally, September and October are big music festival season here; prices drop by the beginning of October, which is also encouraging.
Reims
Reims is noticeably cooler, but the sky here is so blue, the leaves are so fiery, and the grapes are so amazing that some are ready to put up with the weather. The “high season” here lasts a long time - until November, as in Bordeaux: as soon as summer tourism ends, wine tourism begins, which is almost more popular. These are all regions that produce high-quality wine, there’s nothing you can do about it.
There are not very many attractions in Reims, but they are all so unusual, complex and interesting that you don’t notice it - to be honest, you can look at the Reims Cathedral alone for a couple of days. The Coronation Cathedral of the French monarchs is covered with intricate bas-reliefs, gargoyles, sculptures and carvings, and is decorated with the famous Laughing Angel - a small but completely unique sculpture on the facade, a symbol of Champagne.
There are no big festivals in Champagne in the fall (the city is busy with wine and the wine trade), but there are a lot of wine events: holidays, tastings, etc. Autumn in the vineyards is a special thing: there are late varieties of grapes (the sweetest), and stunning colors, and impossible smells, and autumn menus in restaurants - the local seasonal cuisine is excellent, and I have never seen grapes in such quantity and quality anywhere, even in countries much more southern.
