Sights of Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a small cozy town with decorated houses in a medieval style. It’s nice to walk around such a city, look into local Bavarian restaurants and enjoy the atmosphere. The main attractions of Garmisch are natural. From here you can safely go to the mountains (by ski lift or on foot), to canyons, lakes, rivers and other places, and everywhere you can find panoramic views and stunning landscapes. Garmisch is also considered a climatic resort.

Pixelteufel/Garmisch, old town

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is located in a valley, surrounded by beautiful mountains - the Bavarian Alps. There are quite a few points and peaks in the area, but the most famous is Mt. Its summit is neither more nor less than the highest point in all of Germany. From here you can clearly see not only Bavaria, but also neighboring Austria, with which Garmisch borders. You can climb to the top using a comfortable indoor lift (travel time is about 15 minutes). Along the route you will be able to see the alpine lake Eibsee and the Zugspitze glacier of the same name. The highest peak point of the mountain is 2962 meters.

Bernd Brägelmann/Zugspitz

The place is also considered an interesting walking route. Here you can see a gorge up to 1 km long and 86 meters high. The fast mountain river Partnakh flows at the bottom of the gorge. The river is fed by the waters of the Zugspitze glacier. The Partnachklamm is today one of the most fascinating canyons in Europe, whose sheer cliffs will make an indelible impression. Visiting the gorge is possible all year round.

Tobias/Partnahklamm

Lovers of a peaceful landscape will certainly appreciate the views of the lake Riisersee, located in the vicinity of Garmisch. This is a small mountain lake with breathtaking views of the Zugspitze. At one time, the lake also gained popularity due to the fact that hockey and speed skating competitions were held here at the 1936 Winter Olympics (the lake freezes in winter).

Another frequent entertainment for vacationers in Garmisch-Partenkirchen are trips to the famous Bavarian castles. At close distance from the resort, in particular, are the castles of Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau and Linderhof. You can get to them either with excursion tours or on your own.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen demonstrates its sights as soon as you find yourself at the entrance to the town - bright, colorful cartoon Bavarian houses, decorated with carved wooden balconies and huge bouquets of flowers, painted facades of city buildings, each with an abundance of biblical scenes, and also polite, smiling local people...

Otherwise, it cannot be otherwise - a luxury resort simply must be like that! Mother Nature also decorates Garmisch-Partenkirchen with its sights - sometimes it pours snow on the tops of the windows, sometimes it blinds you with the sun - it’s a delight for the eyes!

Well, let's take a look at this small but popular southern Bavarian town and see what it has in store for us for a good experience....

Garmisch-Partenkirchen attractions: list

Architecture

The architecture of Garmisch-Partenkirchen itself is an amazing sight! Almost all of it consists of unusual chalet houses, built in the medieval style and decorated with picturesque drawings of biblical scenes.

IV Winter Olympic Games

In 1936, Garmisch-Partenkirchen hosted an interesting sporting event - the IV Winter Olympic Games. It was because of them, despite the discontent of the residents of individual communities - Garmisch and Partenkirchen - that the villages were united into one mountain village, which later became the famous German ski resort.

Interestingly, Partenkirchen is the older part, built on the site of the Partanum military camp founded by ancient Rome. Partanum in those days stood on the road between Venice and Augsburg (a modern Bavarian city, one of the oldest German cities, the capital of Swabia).

Richard Strauss

Also, from the Second World War onwards, the great German composer Richard Strauss lived in Garmisch for 40 years, and he is buried here.

Zugspitze Arena

The highlight of the surrounding area of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the ski area formed around the Zugspitz Mountain - the highest ski area in Germany, where you can ski and downhill from November to May.

Near the Zugspitze there are three more mountain peaks overlooking Garmisch - and in fact it is the fourth highest mountain in Germany - the Leutasch Dreitorspitze (German: Three-Peak Peak), which has a triple peak.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany is a large ski resort with a rich sporting tradition. Just mention that the 1936 Winter Olympics were held here! Since then, the high bar has never been lowered. Garmisch-Partenkirchen has remained the best of the best for many years and is quite capable of competing for this proud title with the most modern resorts. Moreover, you can ride it all year round - the glaciers of the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany, do not melt even in summer and have long attracted many tourists.

Business card

What to see, where to visit

Garmisch-Partenkirchen has very interesting architecture: many houses are built in the medieval style and painted with various miniatures. Here you can also visit the house of Richard Strauss and the music festival in his honor, or go on an excursion to Neuschwanstein and Lindehof.

Trails, slopes, lifts

Garmisch-Partenkirchen has a rare height difference for Germany: from 700 to 2830 m. The highest of all are the slopes on the Zugspitze - the height of the main attraction of the resort is 2966 m.

There are several skiing areas, each of which has its own characteristics. For example, the Zugspitze area with Olympic slopes is preferred by professionals, Wank is recommended for beginners, and Osterfelder is considered suitable for intermediate skiers. The total length of the trails is 62 km, of which easy (“blue”) is 10 km, medium (“red”) is 43 km, and difficult (“black”) is 9 km.

There are 46 lifts in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, their capacity is about 50 thousand people per hour. However, during the season, before the New Year and during the Christmas holidays, queues may accumulate in the most popular areas, since this resort is one of the favorites of the Germans.

Entertainment and active recreation

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is happy to see not only skilled athletes: there are several ski schools here, including for children, where they can teach all the basics of skiing.

In addition to alpine skiing trails, the resort has cross-country skiing trails, two half-pipes and a fun park. During bad weather, you can visit the Olympic Ice Palace or swimming pool, play curling or squash. In the summer, paragliding and hiking are popular in the vicinity of Zugspitze, with the help of which you can not only improve your health, but also appreciate the beauty of this region of Germany.

The ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany has kilometers of the best ski slopes, luxury hotels, restaurants with exquisite and unique dishes and, of course, the fabulous charm of the winter Alps.

Despite the fact that there are a great many photos of Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the Internet, you can appreciate all the splendor only by personally coming here on vacation.

It is most convenient to fly to Munich or Innsbruck, from where the resort can be easily reached by high-speed train, bus or hotel transfer. Travel time takes a maximum of four hours.

Healthy! The tax is only 2 euros.

Interestingly, when coming here, every tourist pays a resort tax. However, in return, he receives a resort card, which allows free travel on local buses, use of the swimming pool, and this card also provides a discount on a number of services.

When is the best time to relax?

The weather in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is favorable for skiing from mid-November to the end of April. Sunny days, high snow cover, warm and mild winters are what attract tourists here.

Where to stay?

There are many hotels in the resort and each of them offers cozy and comfortable rooms, high-quality European service, delicious food and the opportunity to use a spa, gym or swimming pool.

Some hotels are located in close proximity to the ski slopes, while others are closer to the city center. What to choose - tourists decide for themselves.

About slopes and routes

Reviews of Garmisch-Partenkirchen describe this place as more suitable for beginners and amateurs who prefer quiet skiing on gentle and even slopes, without high-speed descents and difficult sections. And this is not surprising.

More than half of all the trails are intended specifically for this category of tourists, and only 15 percent are given over to “black trails,” so fans of adrenaline and extreme skiing will be downright bored here.

However, the resort does not experience a shortage of tourists. The slopes are served by 46 lifts.

The cross-country ski track stretches for almost 150 kilometers through the most picturesque places of the resort.

For snowboard lovers, there are two snowboard parks and two half-pipes that meet all international standards.

Life at the resort never ceases, day or night. You can take a break from skiing and replenish your strength in one of the 100 restaurants and bars. Not only German, but also many European cuisines, as well as Japanese and Chinese, are represented here.

Shops, nightclubs, gyms, swimming pools, tennis courts - everything here is designed to make your vacation memorable and interesting.

The resort often hosts the Alpine Skiing World Cup and various festivals.

Finland, in addition to its famous open thermal springs surrounded by nature, is also the birthplace of Santa Claus. If you decide to spend your winter holidays at one of the local resorts, you can plunge into a real winter fairytale adventure. Editorial advice is to visit the Rovaniemi resort, more about which you can find out.

The sights of Garmisch-Partenkirchen are worthy of special words. Just an hour's drive away are the real “pearls” of the region - Neuschwanstein and Linderhof castles. In the city itself, the estate of Richard Strauss is of greatest value and interest.

In addition, there are many museums, ancient houses, picturesque streets and monasteries.

Here's a video about what you'll find at the resort:

Interestingly, many tourists come to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the summer. The unique beauty of the local nature, the abundance of historically significant places, as well as the opportunity to relax in peace and quiet - this is what attracts vacationers here.

The area of the ski area around the Bavarian luxury ski resort Garmisch Partenkirchen (Germany) is from 700 m wide to 3000 m long, it has 43 ski slopes for skiing, skiers are served by 38 lifts, and there are two more ski parks nearby.

Garmisch Partenkirchen ski resort: everything about the resort

The hosting of the Winter Olympics back in 1936 helped the resort become an international-class skiing and recreation center. It was thanks to her that the first ski slopes and tracks were built near two small Bavarian towns - Garmisch and Partenkirchen. And to make the infrastructure more functional, the towns were merged into one, choosing as a new name a symbiosis of two names - Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

And yet, the unification of the two cities for the 1936 Winter Olympics could not completely erase the boundaries: Garmisch is still chic and expensive today, but Partenkirchen is a little cheaper and traditionally charming.

Tourists usually think that you can only ski from the slopes near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but in fact the ski area is much more impressive - Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald and the Zugspitze itself, which also has slopes from the Austrian side.

Zugspitze

Zugspitze is the highest mountain point in Germany, its height is 2962 meters. On the slopes of the Zugspitze, even today, in the era of global warming, three glaciers are still preserved, which provide ideal conditions for quality winter recreation. From the top of the Zugspitze you can see more than 400 Alpine peaks belonging to neighboring states - Austria, Italy, Switzerland and even France. In clear weather, tourists can expect a dizzying panorama at the top - its range is up to 250 kilometers!

Through the mountain gorge, you can make a fascinating hike to the Austrian side of the Zugspitze. And so that tourists do not remain hungry at the same time, delicious Bavarian and German cuisine is offered at once by four mountain restaurants along the route.

On the slopes of three neighboring mountains - Hausberg, Kreuzeck and Alpspitze, ski slopes of different difficulty levels are laid, the skiing route is called Garmisch-classik. Both beginner skiers and professionals can ski here.

The Hochalmbahn cable car or one of the hiking trails will help you descend to a height of 1700 meters and further to the Kreuzeckbahn lift station, which helps you climb Mount Kreuzeck. The Kandahar-2 cafe will be happy to relax and drink a cup of aromatic coffee; it awaits its visitors at the foot of the legendary slope, where ski championships are held.

The Eibsee cable car, with a breathtaking view of Lake Eibsee, is unfortunately now closed, but for regulars and newcomers to the resort we hasten to announce good news: on December 21, 2017, a new cable car opened on the Zugspitze, instead of the old Eibsee-Seilbahn, which was decommissioned. Seilbahn).

Another interesting event that takes place annually in Garmisch is the Alpine Skiing and Biathlon World Cup. In 2020, downhill skiing competitions (February 8) and a super-giant slalom stage (February 9) will be held here.

When planning to travel along this route, dress warmly, because even in summer the cold wind from the glacier is not entirely comfortable, and in winter the air temperature in these places can reach minus 30° C. From the top, to which the cable car takes you, you can see Austria, Italy and Switzerland.

Train operating hours on the Zugspitze: 8:00 - 17:00

Train operating hours to Glacier Glacier: 8:15 - 17:15.

The ski slopes on the Zugspitze open from approximately 09:00.
