Mayrhofen pistes. Mayrhofen is a major ski resort in Austria

10 km south of Zell am Ziller and Gerlos lies a mountain village Mayrhofen(Mayrhofen) www.mayrhofen.at/, which is one of the largest resorts in Austria.

Almost entirely dependent on tourism, it cannot boast of the special aesthetics of its neighborhoods or national flavor, but it remains an ideal place for a mountain holiday. Gondola Penkenbahn(from the end of May to the beginning of October and from December to April it works all daylight hours, the cost of the climb is 9.3 euros, round trip - 14.4 euros) climbs the slopes Penken massif from the terminal at the southern end of Hauptstrasse, providing access to numerous routes and trails across three valleys. The Ahornbahn gondola (from mid-June to early October and from December to April; prices are the same) takes you from the southeastern edge to the opposite side of the valley to peak of Ahornspitze(Ahornspithu, 2973 m) with an excellent viewing platform and the same variety of routes. The main ski areas here are - Mount Ahorn with many trails for beginners and Penken with numerous short runs, but more experienced skiers will certainly choose the difficult "black" slopes Hintertux Glacier, lying 20 km to the southwest, or no less interesting slopes Tuxertal glacier, on which skiing is possible until the beginning of summer.

Ski holiday

In total, here, along the slopes of a small basin at the confluence of Ziller and Zemmbach, there are 159 km of ski slopes (27% “blue”, 59% “red” and 14% “black”) with altitudes from 600 to 2500 meters. Together with the year-round trails of the Tuxertal glaciers (Tuxertal, 10 km to the southwest) and Hintertux (9 km to the southwest), as well as the slopes of the resorts Finkenberg (1 km southwest), Rastkogel (6 km northwest) and Eggalm (6 km to the southwest) this gives almost 300 km of a wide variety of trails with a maximum altitude of 3250 meters!

There are three main ski areas in Mayrhofen. Slopes Ahornspitze(2973 m) are recommended for beginners and skiers with little experience, and the longest route here is 5.5 km, and it leads directly to Mayrhofen. Region Penken(Penken) on the slopes of Mount Penkenjoch (2095 m) is more suitable for experienced skiers. The pistes here are mostly "red", as in the adjacent ski areas Pinkenberg and Hippach, halfway between Mayrhofen and Zell am Ziller. And the southwestern region Finkenberg offers short but quite steep slopes with a southern exposure, most interesting in high season.

The slopes are great for freeride Gerenta(Gerent), professionals will also appreciate the steepest track in Austria - Harakiri(in some sections its slope is 78%!), and fans of long routes will certainly be interested in the “around the world” Höhenmeterfresser Runde, which is a whole chain of sequentially located lifts and slopes with a total length of about 46 km.

All this is served by 53 modern lifts, and here is the longest cable car in Austria - the Ahornbahn (from mid-June to early October and from December to April, it operates all daylight hours; the cost of the lift is 9.3 euros, round trip - 14.4 euro), leading from the south-eastern outskirts of Mayrhofen to the Ahornspitze peak (Ahornspitze, 2973 m) with an excellent viewing platform and the same variety of routes of all types. The Penkenbahn gondola (open all daylight hours from late May to early October and December to April at the same prices) climbs the slopes of the Penken massif from a terminal at the southern end of Hauptstrasse, providing access to numerous routes and trails across three valleys.

For cross-country skiing enthusiasts, there are more than 30 km of marked trails in the vicinity of the resort. There is a snowboard park Burton Park Mayrhofen, special areas for carving and powder, several ski schools and kindergartens, 3 discos, many rental offices, bars, restaurants and nightclubs. There are more than 60 km of hiking trails, most of which are actively used in winter, there are several tennis and squash courts, 4 swimming pools plus two swimming pools with hydromassage and a waterfall, two water slides, several saunas and baths, an outdoor skating rink, a paragliding club and aeronautics, bowling alley, fitness center and other elements of modern recreation infrastructure.

Tourist passes

The Zillertaler Superskipass winter pass system provides access to all ski lifts in the Zillertal valley and the Tuxertal glacier (4 days - 118 euros; 7 days - 185 euros). There is also a shortened version only for the Zillertal Valley (1 day - 32.5 euros, three and a half days - 103 euros), a subscription to the Hintertux Glacier (1 day - 35 euros, 3 days - 94 euros, 6 days - 165 euros) and other options. Moreover, the Zillertaler Superskipass includes free travel on all types of public transport (except taxis) in the Zillertal Valley and even by rail from Jenbach to Mayrhofen. However, local buses are not particularly pedantic, and they finish their journey quite early - at 19.00-19.30.

You can use the separate Mayrhofen Lift Pass, which is valid for the lifts of the Mayrhofen ski area only (Ahorn, Penken, Rastkogel and Eggalm). A one-day ski pass will cost approximately 41.5 euros for an adult, 33 euros for a teenager and 18.5 euros for a child aged 6 to 13 years, a seasonal one - 467, 375 and 210 euros respectively.

Skiing season is from December to early - mid-April.

Mayrhofen trails

Mayrhofen has the longest cable car, the steepest slope in Austria, 159 km of pistes and 3 main ski areas. The Ahorn slope is recommended for beginners and skiers with little experience, Penken - for experienced athletes and professionals. In half an hour you can reach the year-round ski area on the Tuxer glacier. For cross-country skiing enthusiasts, there are more than 30 km of marked trails in the vicinity of the resort.

Slopes of Penken and Ahorn

The best skiing is on the Penken slope, where there is a gondola lift. It will be especially interesting for skiers in the area of the Penkenoich peak (2095 m), from where you can return to the city by gondola or along the red slopes - to the towns of Finkenberg and Hippach, and then get to the hotel by bus. The long red track in Finkenberg is also considered interesting. There are virgin trails on the Gerent slope, and children can enjoy easy trails in the Eilsenalm area.

The Ahorn slope is not as extensive as Penken. Its advantage is that all its pistes descend directly to Mayrhofen.

Snow parks

Snowboarders won't be bored here either: Burton Park Mayrhofen offers a lot of fun for all fans of snowboarding and freestyle skiing. The park is equipped with everything necessary for excellent skiing, in addition, it has its own 4-chair lift. There are areas for professionals, amateurs and beginners, a half-pipe, rails, and jumps. The center of the park is two parallel tracks with three jumps: the first is small, the second is 15 m long and the third is big air.

The used ski pass can be kept as a souvenir or returned to the ticket office in exchange for 2 EUR.

Mayrhofen Hotels

The towns of Mayrhofen, Finkenberg and Hippach-Ramsau may look small, but they can accommodate up to 15 thousand guests at a time. There are expensive luxury hotels, high-quality “three rubles”, and small family boarding houses with budget accommodation.

4* hotels mean excellent service, swimming pools, spa centers, saunas, gyms and other little things that are pleasant to the heart of a sybarite. However, during the ski season you have to pay for all this from 160 EUR per room. Three-star hotels, as a rule, do not have spas or other glamorous tinsel. But thanks to reasonable prices - from 125 EUR - they offer the optimal balance between comfort and cost of living.

The most common categories of housing at the resort are guesthouses (from 70 EUR) and apartments (from 126 EUR). The latter are especially popular among large youth companies.

Shopping

Food prices in stores are higher than in Moscow, but not prohibitive. Supermarkets are open on weekdays until 18:30, on Saturdays until 17:00, Sunday is a day off. The only place where you can buy at least some groceries on Sunday is the gas station shops (open 24 hours a day). However, it is about 1.5 times more expensive.

The cost of sports equipment in Mayrhofen is the same as in Moscow. You can look for models from past collections at discounted prices. During the pre- and post-season, there are sales with very significant discounts.

On Saturday mornings, it’s worth checking out the farmers’ market, whose stalls are literally bursting with Tyrolean speck, sausages, dried and smoked sausages. It’s not easy to understand this abundance, but the thin, mouth-watering Landjegr sausages are definitely worth a try. And at the same time, buy Murmeltier Salbe warming ointment based on marmot fat - an excellent remedy for sprains and sore throat.

From mid-November until the end of December, Waldfestplatz is transformed into a fabulous Christmas market - one of the best in Austria - with cute trinkets, hot mulled wine and traditional Christmas baked goods.

Ladies going to the Munich Oktoberfest can take a closer look at the traditional Tyrolean “dirndl” costume, which is very beautiful, but, alas, not particularly necessary in the rest of life. But a blouse from him in the style of “a waiter’s dream”, with an immodest neckline, will certainly not be lying around in the closets. Another classic of the genre is crystal souvenirs from Swarovski and Mozartkugeln sweets. These handmade marzipan balls in a chocolate shell are strikingly different from those sold in regular stores. Those who are tired of Mozart's profile will certainly be pleased with the painted wooden dolls. One of the most original is a nutcracker doll, exactly like one from Hoffmann’s fairy tale.

Cuisine and restaurants of Mayrhofen

The number of restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs, pastry shops and snack bars in the resort is approaching a hundred. The interior of most of them is made in traditional Tyrolean style - with an abundance of wood, dark ceiling beams, branched antlers, old photographs and waitresses in national costumes. All ski areas have cafes where you can have lunch and warm up with mulled wine, while at the same time admiring the surrounding views and soaking up the sun on the outdoor terrace.

Pay tribute to local cuisine - pork with bacon and potatoes or venison with mushrooms and lingonberries in a frying pan.

The most popular and noisy establishment in Mayrhofen is the Ice Bar near the lower Penkenbahn cable car station, favored by the international crowd. However, the language barrier does not prevent the gathered choir from chanting Tyrolean songs and dancing right on the tables.

Coffee and cake in a pastry shop will cost 5-7 EUR, a glass of beer in a bar - from 4-5 EUR, lunch in a cafe on the slope - 15-20 EUR, a signature dish in a restaurant - 25 EUR.

The Gasser Butcher Shop is a great place to try out all the different flavors of Mayrhofen's deli meats without breaking the bank. You can eat at the counter inside or at a table outside. To quench your hunger and thirst, 5-10 EUR is enough here.

Haute cuisine at the resort is represented by the Sieghard restaurant in Hippach. It is awarded two "chef's hats" (similar to Michelin stars), received from the authoritative restaurant guide Gault et Millau. A 5-course gourmet menu with wine costs from 100 EUR.

Entertainment and attractions

Very interesting is the Brandberg watermill near the Mühlbach stream, which was built in the 18th century and was used until the 50s. last century. You can also visit one of the distilleries in the region, where you can learn about the origin of schnapps and try this drink, or even buy a liter or two. Continuing the culinary theme, it is worth going on an excursion to the Zillertal cheese factory (Hollenzen, 116). At 11 production sites with a total area of 6000 sq. m in the first cheese factory in Tyrol, open to visitors, guests will see how milk is processed and turned into cheese.

The Strasser Hausl estate with its charming old-world atmosphere is located near Hippach in the Zillertal. It is interesting for its unusual story of the Strass children, who glorified the song “Silent Night, Holy Night” throughout the world. They will tell you more about this during a tour of the estate.

The tall spire of the parish church of the Virgin Mary stands out clearly against the backdrop of the mountains. The church burned several times and its baroque interior dates back to the 18th century. Nearby is the oldest attraction of the resort - the Marienbrunn fountain, which has been regularly supplying the residents of Mayrhofen with the purest alpine water for 7 centuries. Another fountain with the self-explanatory name “Europe” appeared at the resort only in 1956. Its 6 jets falling into a stone bowl symbolize the 6 states that in 1951 joined the European Coal and Steel Community.

From Mayrhofen train station you can take a retro trip along the Zellertal Railway, built in 1902, one of the oldest narrow-gauge railways in service (website in English). Puffing and releasing clouds of steam, the locomotive pulls several red carriages behind it. Each passenger has the opportunity to look into the driver’s cabin and choose a carriage according to his taste: an open “convertible” or a “crystal carriage” with its own bar, decorated with 62 thousand crystals and 68 Swarovski figures. The speed is only 35 km/h, which allows you not only to feel like a nostalgic traveler, but also to admire the landscapes passing outside the window.

For lovers of active recreation, the resort offers travel along mountain trails, guided ascents, horseback riding in the arena, paragliding, sledding, bowling alley, billiards, squash, and hot air balloon flights. There is a cinema, an “aqua arena” (two swimming pools with hydromassage and a waterfall, two water slides, several saunas and baths), outdoor skating rinks, indoor courts, discos.

Also in Mayrhofen there is the Erlebnisbad water park with slides, a sauna, or go to the solarium-grotto (website in English). There is also free parking and plenty of restaurants.

Weather in Mayrhofen

The climate of the Ziller Valley, as well as the entire Tyrol, is influenced by the warm, dry foehn wind, which blows most often during the transition seasons. Winter is usually snowy and long; snow can fall at the end of October. The ski season at the resort lasts from late November to early April, but global warming may make adjustments. Skiing on the Hintertux Glacier is possible all year round.

The coldest and snowiest month is January. The closer to spring, the more likely avalanches are to occur. The Tyrolean spring is cool and windy, and even in early May the weather can be changeable. Summers are warm, with really hot days and sometimes heavy, short rains.

Austria has long occupied a leading place among ski resorts. Mayrhofen is considered the second most popular in this region. It is located in the Zillertal valley at the point where it is divided into smaller ones - Zemmgrund, Zillergrund, Stillupgrund and Tuxertal.

Both professionals, beginners and children will find a suitable descent here.

Snow parks
