Temples of Bangkok

Today the country is one of the most popular resorts in the world. Much of the country's economy is based on year-round tourism. Thailand's economy also depends heavily on exports: the state grows rice, corn, cassava, coconuts, durian and bananas. The main disadvantage of the country's economy is that it is concentrated around Bangkok, while other parts of Thailand remain undeveloped.

A Brief History of Thailand

In 1238, the kingdom of Sukhothai was formed, and in 1350, the kingdom of Ayutthaya. In subsequent centuries, the country saw influence from India and China.

In 1782, the Chakri dynasty ascended the throne, thanks to whose strong governance Thailand was not colonized, unlike other Asian countries. In 1932, the country experienced a peaceful revolution and a constitutional monarchy was established. Since 1939, Siam began to bear the name Thailand.

On December 26, 2004, a tsunami hit Thailand, killing 5,000 people. In 2006, a military coup took place in the country, and in 2008 a new government was created.

Koh Phi Phi Islands in Thailand

Sights of Thailand

The beaches of Thailand annually attract many tourists from around the world. Since 2005, Russia and Thailand have maintained a visa-free regime, which allows Russian tourists to stay in Thailand for 30 days without a visa. From May to October there is a rainy season.

Koh Tao Island in Thailand. The second name of the island is Turtle Island

The main attractions of Thailand are: the largest Buddha statue in the world, located near the city of Nakhon Path, the temple on Wat Phra Doi Suthep (near Chiang Mai), the National Museum, Chinatown, the floating market and the Patpong night market in Bangkok. Also worth visiting are the Buddhist temples of Chiang Mai, the hot springs of San Kamphaeng, the islands of Ko Phangan and Ko Samui, the mountainous city of Mae Khong Son, the cities of Ayutthaya and Railay, the island of Ko Phi Phi and the unique Hin Daeng Bay, which is excellent for diving.

Thailand, also called the Kingdom of Thailand, is the most popular resort in Southeast Asia and all thanks to the fact that the air temperature at the resorts remains virtually unchanged throughout the year and on average stays at +30 degrees, and the sea warms up to +26 -+28.

If we talk about the correct spelling of the country, then someone decided that in Russian it is correct to write Thailand (through I), however, according to Yandex statistics, most people ask for the word Thailand (through Y) on the Internet. Based on this, we will also adhere to this writing.

The capital and largest metropolis is the city of Bangkok, which the Thais themselves call Krung Thep. There are 2 international airports in Bangkok, through which most tourists enter Thailand - Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang.

Tourists who come to Thailand to relax at the Pattaya resort first fly to Suvarnabhumi Airport and after that take a bus or taxi and arrive in Pattaya.

Sights of Bangkok

Those tourists who decide to settle in Bangkok for sightseeing mainly settle in the tourist area of Khao San Road, which is located in the Old Town.

Bangkok has a large number of attractions, to explore which you need to head to the Old Town of Rattanakosin.

Must-sees include: Grand Royal Palace, Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Temple of the Reclining Buddha, Temple of Dawn, Chinatown, Golden Mountain, Marble Temple, the tallest building Baiyok Sky Hotel and Temple of the Golden Buddha.

Resorts of Thailand

There are 3 main resorts in Thailand - the city and the islands and Koh Samui. The rest of the resorts in Thailand cannot boast of a large number of tourists, but this is precisely what attracts those who want to be alone.

Pattaya should be chosen by those who come to Thailand to have fun. Here every tourist will find something of his own. It is in Pattaya that the largest Russian-speaking diaspora lives. You should not go to this city with children, as it is the capital of sex tourism.

Phuket is suitable for both partygoers and families with children; everything will depend on which resort on the island you choose. If you come to have fun and are no stranger to nightlife, then you should choose a hotel on Patong Beach. Families would be better off staying at other beaches - Kata, Karon, etc.

Koh Samui is much smaller in size than the island of Phuket and is known for being a holiday destination for families with children. This does not mean that there are no entertaining nightlife spots here. Young people who choose Samui for their holidays prefer to settle on the noisiest beach, Chaweng, where they can dance in clubs at night.

Islands of Thailand

In the south of Thailand there are thousands of islands, which are either world-famous resorts or generally uninhabited and have no name.

The largest island in Thailand is Phuket, which is also the second most popular resort.

It is customary to go to Koh Chang island for 2 days, and you can buy a tour to this island at any travel agency in Pattaya.

Koh Phangan is an island where Fool Moon Parties are held every month during the full moon. You can get here from Koh Samui.

The Similan Islands are also located close to Phuket and the opportunity to visit them exists only from November to April.

The famous James Bond Islands grace Phang Nga province and can also be seen on a day tour from Phuket.

Excursions in Thailand

Currency and banks

In Thailand, Thai baht are used in everyday life and for many years 1 dollar is equal to approximately 32 baht.

You can travel to Thailand with both dollars and euros. It is better to take large dollar bills with you, as small ones are accepted at a reduced rate. This discrimination is not observed in the euro. You can also take rubles with you to Thailand, but there are much fewer exchange offices where they are accepted, and the exchange rate is often not profitable for tourists.

There are a large number of ATMs in Thailand, so you can take a bank card with you and withdraw money from it. Most ATMs charge a commission of 150 baht ($5) from your card for each transaction, so it’s better to withdraw the maximum possible amount at once (10 or 20 thousand baht). There are also ATMs in Thailand that do not charge fees - these are AEON Bank ATMs. Most of them can be found in large shopping centers and hypermarkets.

Weather in Thailand and when is the best time to go there

As we said above, in the resorts of Thailand the air temperature is around +30 degrees. The sea is always warm, even at night.

The tourist season is considered to be the period from November to April. The rainy season lasts from May to October.

The monsoon season can negatively affect your holiday, as some excursions from Phuket are either canceled or reduced, as there are strong waves at sea and there is a danger that the ship with tourists will capsize. Also during this period it is impossible to swim in Phuket due to high waves and a ban on swimming.

The rainy season will not have any negative impact on your holiday in Pattaya.

Transport in Thailand

In Pattaya, tourists move around the city in pickup trucks with two shops, which they call tuk-tuks, but the Thais themselves call them songthaews. The fare is 10 baht. You can also take either a regular taxi or a motorcycle taxi. Here the price is negotiable.

In Phuket, tuk-tuks work like taxis, so travel on this island will cost much more than in Pattaya. As such, there is no public transport in Phuket. Centenarians usually rent a motorbike and move around the island on it.

If you need to move to another city or island, a budget airline such as Air Asia may be your best option. Even a flight to a neighboring country, such as Cambodia, will not exceed $50. better in advance.

Bus and train services are also present in Thailand, but tourists prefer to travel by air-conditioned tourist buses.

Safety in Thailand

The biggest problem in Thailand may be theft from hotel safes. In no other country in the world are thefts in hotels as developed as in Thailand, so it will be much safer to carry everything valuable with you, and even to the beach. If something happens, you will be able to fight back the robber, but when someone steals from your hotel room in your absence, you will not be able to prevent it. Theft from rooms is almost always observed only in package hotels, where tourists who have purchased vouchers are brought. Family hotels and guest houses value their reputation, so they don’t steal.

Another danger for tourists lurks on the street. Thais on mopeds, passing tourists, snatch their bags and drive away at high speed. It will be impossible to catch up with them or remember the number written in Thai characters.

When withdrawing money, it is better to use ATMs located in banks or shopping centers. Those ATMs that are located on the streets can be used by scammers to make a duplicate of your card and then withdraw all the money from it.

Taxi drivers in Thailand, as well as in other countries, are dishonest and for the most part are trying to get rich at the expense of stupid tourists. When boarding a taxi, always make sure that the taxi driver turns on the meter, and make sure that it does not move too quickly. Otherwise, just tell the taxi driver to stop. If a taxi driver offers you to stop at some store along the road, then never agree.

Food and fruits in Thailand

Thais are a nation that can eat 24 hours a day, so food trays, which Russian tourists here call makashnitsy, are present at every turn. Don’t be afraid to eat from them, as no one has ever been poisoned.

Almost all main dishes in Thailand are served very spicy, so if you are not a fan of chili peppers, then inform the restaurant in advance so that the dish is prepared for you not spicy.

In Thailand, you must try Tom Yum soup, Pad Thai noodles and Som Tam salad.

Thailand probably has the largest selection of exotic fruits, as the fruit is harvested 3 times a year. The most favorite fruit for the Thais themselves is durian, but due to its strong smell, it is prohibited from being brought into hotels or transported on airplanes. Here you can find watermelon not only with red flesh, but also with yellow flesh, although they taste the same. All the fruits you know will be much tastier in Thailand. Here you don’t have to buy a whole watermelon, pineapple or durian, as the sellers can cut them for you, remove the seeds, put them in a transparent bag, to which they will attach wooden skewers on which you will string the fruit.

Alcohol in Thailand

Thai beers include Chang, Singha, Leo and Tiger. There are also other beers that are sold in both glass bottles and cans.

Thai rum Sang Som is quite popular among tourists, which is sold in both small and large bottles.

Shopping in Thailand

In Thailand, it is profitable to buy iPhone mobile phones, since, firstly, their cost is lower than in Russia, and secondly, when leaving Thailand, right at the airport you will receive a VAT refund of 8% of the purchase price.

Tourists also buy Thai cosmetics, aromatic soaps, silk products, souvenirs in the form of elephants and Buddha figurines in Thailand.

If you are planning to buy Thai-made clothes, then the cheapest place to do this is in Bangkok in numerous shopping centers, and simply in street markets.

Mobile communications and Internet

There are 3 mobile operators in Thailand: True Move, DTAC and AIS. The cost of calls within Thailand, regardless of the operator you choose, will be 1-2 baht. You can top up your balance at any 7/Eleven or Family Mart store.

If you are planning to call Russia from Thailand, then it is better to do this with a Thai SIM card, as it will be cheaper than connecting to roaming.

If you are traveling to Thailand during the peak tourist season, i.e. for the New Year, it’s better in advance. If you are going to relax at another time of the year, you will easily find suitable accommodation upon arrival at the resort. However, you don’t have to stay in a fancy hotel. You can rent an apartment, bungalow, mansion, or stay in a guest house. An inexpensive room will cost you 500 baht ($15) per night. For long-term stays, you have the right to demand a significant discount.

Travel insurance to Thailand

To holiday in Thailand, it is not necessary to buy travel medical insurance, since you will be allowed into the country without it. However, as practice shows, accidents happen to those who do not have insurance. In Thailand, accidents with tourist buses occur quite often, and cases of injury on excursions, the beach, and various tropical diseases also occur. Medicine in Thailand is very expensive, so those who have not paid medical expenses are simply not allowed to leave the country.

To protect yourself, it is better to take care of insurance in advance.

Thailand is a country of unique exoticism. Every year a huge number of tourists from all over the world come here. And this is not surprising.

Holidays in Thailand are as varied as possible. For beach lovers there are picturesque beaches with excellent diving conditions. For those who want to plunge into the culture of the country, there are countless Buddhist temples and shrines. Many have heard about the “land of smiles” and the luxurious resorts of the Andaman Sea, but not everyone clearly understands the geographical location of Thailand. Why is it hot there in December, how long does it take to fly there and what states border the kingdom? In this article we will answer all the questions regarding the location of Thailand on the world map.

Where is Thailand on the mainland

The Kingdom of Thailand belongs to Southeast Asia region. If we talk about a narrower localization, then this is the Indochina Peninsula and (partially) Malacca. The territory of Thailand is washed by two seas - the South China (more precisely, the Gulf of Thailand) and the Andaman.

The country lies in a tropical climate zone, which makes it attractive for the resort business. The annual cycle is somewhat unusual for Europeans, since it is divided into three key seasons:

  • summer (March-May);
  • rainy season (June-September);
  • cool season (October-February).

Where to look for Thailand on the world map

Finding Thailand on the map is quite easy. You can start your search from India, mentally moving east from it, or from China, making an imaginary journey to the southeast of it. The Pacific and Indian oceans will serve as water landmarks.

Thailand is located in the central regions of Southeast Asia, closer to the equator. Thanks to the tropical climate and tropical monsoons, local people are able to harvest crops several times throughout the annual cycle.

There are not many “year-round” resort states in the world. One of them is Thailand. The north of the kingdom is covered with tropical deciduous forests, the humid south is covered with evergreen tropical thickets.

Relief

The territory of the kingdom is dominated by low-lying, flat-type terrain. The course of the Chao Phray River passes through the Menam Lowland, which is bounded on the south by the Gulf of Thailand, and on the north it abuts the Luang Prabang Range and the Phipannam Highlands. The west of the country is also high-mountainous - there are the Bilau, Tanentaunji and Khunthan ridges, which stretch all the way to Malacca.

The highest peak in Thailand is located in the north-west of the country - Mount Doi Inthanon. Its height is 2559 m. As for the southeastern borders of the kingdom, they pass through the Kravan mountain range, and in the south of Malacca flat terrain prevails.

Water resources

Thailand's natural resources are not limited to its seas. There are many large rivers flowing through the kingdom, and there are many beautiful lakes and reservoirs. The Mekong and other river basins are fed primarily by rainwater, so level fluctuations are periodically observed.

The main artery of the country is the Chao Phraya River. The next most important are the Mekong and Salween. If you move to Malacca, you will be able to admire the most beautiful mountain streams.

The largest lake in Thailand is Thaleluang. Then (if we take the area as a basis) there are numerous reservoirs: Chiaulan, Sirikit, Ubon Ratna, Khaulem.

How long does it take to fly to Thailand?

Duration of air travel from Moscow to Bangkok averages 9.5 hours. This figure cannot be called final, since the flight is influenced by a number of factors. These include weather conditions, aircraft type and air corridor.

In addition, you need to take into account the nature of the flight: you can take a ticket on a direct route or save money and fly to Thailand from Moscow with transfers.

Neighbours

In the west, where the Andaman Sea extends, Thailand borders Myanmar. The northeastern borders separate the kingdom from Laos, and the eastern borders from Cambodia. The southern territories of Thailand abut Myanmar.

Cost of the trip

Prices for trips to Thailand range from $750 to $1,500. Here are some popular destinations (prices are in USD, departures from Moscow):

Where is the trip? Price
Pattaya 750
Krabi 910
Phuket 1400
Koh Chang Island 1440
Samui 1460

We have described it in detail. Now anyone can cook it.

Go ahead and check out the best beaches in Koh Chang. Now you will know that good beaches are not only in Phuket.

If you don’t yet know which sea is washed by Thailand, then the page will reveal this information.

  1. Getting on a plane don't forget about the time difference, which is 4 hours relative to Moscow time.
  2. In Thailand, the food is very tasty, but it has one insidious feature - spiciness. Thai spices will liken your breath to the exhaust from the mouth of a dragon.
  3. Experienced tourists who have visited the Thai islands on excursions advise being careful with the inhabitants of the local beaches - crabs.
  4. In cafes and restaurants, eat what the locals eat. You can't go wrong.
  5. Respect for Thai culture is the basis for a successful holiday. Thais will certainly come to your aid if you don’t go too far (for example, by insulting the king or falling into a temple in shorts).
  6. Found cheap flights? Book immediately!
