What excursions in London are available for seniors. Tours of London

There are many cities in the world where visiting even for a few days is a great success and an exciting adventure.
Organizing a trip yourself will be both cheaper and more interesting than buying from a travel agency. My sister has already talked about how she
I went and saw Gaudi’s masterpieces with my own eyes, and also about

Today I again give the floor to her, the article is dedicated to an independent trip to the capital of Britain - London.

What excursions around London can you take during this period? Where to go in London? How much does housing and food cost? How to travel to London cheaply? What can you save on?

To London on your own: how to get there and where to live?

London is one of the most expensive cities on the planet. Therefore, not everyone can afford to spend a long vacation here.
Most visitors to the city come for three days, because over the weekend you can visit various excursions in London and have time to absorb
take in the beauty and atmosphere of the British capital, and at the same time relax.

London accommodation – hotels and guest houses

The range of housing prices is very wide, I would say prices tend to go somewhere to infinity.
There are hotels where a room can cost £1,500 or more (almost 150,000 rubles at the exchange rate).
There is practically no cheap housing (as in Thailand, for example).
The cheapest accommodation is hostels or hotels in the suburbs (can be found for £25-50 per day).

What to do if you don’t want to live in a hostel with strangers? And spending a lot of time on the road is also not exactly what you expect from your short vacation,
which, in theory, should be fabulous and remembered for a lifetime.
There is a solution: You can try to find a room in a small private hotel (use the search engines venere.com or booking.com).

Of course, you need to plan your trip in advance; the sooner you start looking for cheap accommodation in London, the greater your chances of finding a hotel in London at the lowest price.

We found a small nice hotel in South Kensington (we lived near Earls Court tube station).
The road to central London was easy and fast, which suited us just fine. We even walked from the hotel to Hyde Park.
Our hotel was called Hotel Boka. This is a small hotel with a few rooms.

Hotel Boka in London

Yes, the room is quite small, but quite bearable for three nights.

Hotel Boka in London (photo)

Hotel Boka in London (photo)

The furnishings in our room included a double bed, two armchairs, a mirror, a TV (we definitely could have done without it on such a short vacation;)).
What is very important, our room had a private bathroom with a toilet (not a shared one, like in most hostels!!!). In the corridor there was also a small kitchenette (I would even say a kitchen corner) with a stove, electric kettle, refrigerator and dishes. We didn’t cook, however, but the kettle and refrigerator came in handy.

Our room at the Boka Hotel cost us 60 pounds per night, including breakfast - traditional Full English :)

You can also save on a trip to London on your own, or on a flight, if you plan your trip in advance and use a low-cost airline.

We flew with Wizz Air. In most cases, such air carriers fly not to the central airport of the city, but to several remote ones.

We, for example, flew not to Heathrow, but to London Luton Airport and still had to get to the city for an hour and a half by bus.
There is an easyBus bus company right at the airport, tickets cost £15 per person.

Mini-vacation in London: self-guided tours of London

There is a lot to see in London. In London, you can organize a lot of inexpensive and interesting excursions for yourself.

For example, in the city center there are majestic buildings, witnesses of different historical eras, and world-famous attractions,
which have become the hallmark of the city.

We began our acquaintance with London in Trafalgar Square.

Trafalgar Square's many attractions are just a stone's throw away. You can see Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey,
parliament with the tower familiar to everyone from English lessons, in which the Big Ben bell is located, and next to it is another symbol of the city - the London Eye
(Ferris wheel).

After sightseeing we took a walk along the Thames, the embankment was full of tourists, as well as street musicians, actors and mimes.
We walked to Tower Bridge.

We were very lucky with the weather. During the three days that we spent in London, it never rained and we could walk all day. Perhaps I scared off the rain with my umbrella, which I always carried in my bag :)

Crossing Tower Bridge to the other side, you can visit the Tower, formerly a fortress and prison, and now a museum, which is one of the most visited tourist sites in the United Kingdom. There are several exhibitions and museums here. An excursion to the Tower on your own is not very cheap,
Entrance to the Tower of London is about 20 pounds.

Since the Tower is a favorite tourist attraction, the infrastructure here is developed. Nearby you will find many cafes and stalls where you can grab a quick bite. We became visitors to a small bistro with traditional English food. The fish and chips were wonderful.

On your own to London: day 2

Of course, it is impossible to imagine London without Piccadilly Street, which we visited on the second day of our stay in the English capital.

This is the most famous and recognizable street in the city. There are a lot of tourists in Piccadilly at any time. On this street there are all kinds of shops, mostly souvenir shops, and cafes.

In addition, on this day we managed to get to Chinatown, wandered the streets in the central part of the city and relaxed in Hyde Park.

The park with many lawns, alleys and benches, sports grounds and a pond occupies a large area.

We had a picnic in Hyde Park. Everywhere one could see groups of friends, families with children who came to spend a day off in the fresh air and brought
Bring baskets of food and drinks with you.

What I really like about parks abroad and in London parks in particular is that you can walk on the lawns, you can sit on the lawns, lie down and even roll on the lawns, and there are no signs for you: “Do not walk on the lawns, fine... »

To London on your own: day 3

On the third day we visited another park - Regent's Park, and walked along Baker Street. How about!!! It is simply impossible to visit London and not visit a place that you read about in books as a child!!! There is of course a Sherlock Holmes museum on this street.

Nearby there is another museum - the Madame Tussauds wax museum.

Of course, I would like to visit all these museums, but alas, it is impossible to embrace the immensity in three days.

We chose the London National Gallery, which is located in Trafalgar Square. Entry to the gallery is free.

Most of all I was fascinated by the Impressionists (however, I love them most of all). Here you can see the original "Sunflowers" by Van Gogh
(one painting from the series is located in London).
Unfortunately, they were not allowed to take photographs and they watched the tourists very vigilantly, so the pictures remained only in memory.

Just like that, an interesting and eventful vacation in London ended in the same place where it began - in Trafalgar Square.

In my opinion, the best way to explore the city is on foot. You can use the metro to save time or,
if the distances are really long (although we walked so much around London, I’m afraid to even convert this into kilometers).

We used the so-called Oyster Card (oyster card). On the London Underground, you must swipe your card both when entering and exiting.
This is how you pay for travel, the cost of which depends on the zones and distance.

If time permits and you wish, you can buy a bus tour on a double-decker bus or on a boat along the Thames.
Prices in cafes and restaurants in London are very high. As an alternative, you can buy groceries at the supermarket (ready-made sandwiches or something for sandwiches, fresh vegetables and fruits, water) and take the food with you in your backpack. During your walk, you can have a picnic in one of the many beautiful parks in the city.

Of course, this option is only suitable in the warm season. We were in London in mid-August. And everything turned out more than successfully. These three days in London will forever remain in my best memories.

You can object to me and say that you won’t see much in three days, and you’ll probably be right. But the main thing is not quantity, but quality. If you organize a trip to London yourself, thinking through all the details, setting priorities in advance, then it will truly be unforgettable.
And most importantly, these are the memories and impressions that will stay with you forever.

How to save money on a hotel or apartment on vacation?

I'm looking on the Rumguru website. It contains absolutely all discounts on hotels and apartments from 30 booking systems, including booking. I often find very profitable options, I can save from 30 to 80%

How to save on insurance?

Insurance abroad is required. Any appointment is very expensive and the only way to avoid paying out of pocket is to choose an insurance policy in advance. We have been applying for many years on the website, which gives the best prices for insurance and selection along with registration takes only a couple of minutes.

I wish you a stunning, unforgettable, amazing holiday in London!!!

Tour of the Tower of London

Each capital has its own iconic historical place - in London it is the Tower, with which many important episodes in the political and social life of England are associated. Centuries and eras have changed, and the purpose of this symbolic monumental object has changed accordingly. During the tour you will learn that the Tower was built in the 11th century. by the Normans who conquered England as a defensive fortress. Later it housed royal families, the Mint, the royal treasury and, finally, a sinister prison for political opponents.

Many secrets of the history of royal dynasties, court intrigues and their sometimes terrible consequences will be revealed to you.

Aristocratic London

The central area that attracts a respectable and prosperous public is the St. James Quarter. Prestige, luxury and an aura of elitism reign here. The street is filled with expensive real estate, restaurants and shops with exquisite, elegant and branded goods. A guided voyage through the most aristocratic place in all of England will make an indelible impression. The cost of the tour is 33 euros per person. The walk takes place on Mondays and Fridays from 9:00 to 12:00.

Hello London! Sightseeing tour

Another tour of London by bus for £30 per person, focusing on the monuments in the western part of the city, and then moving on to one of the oldest quarters, called the City of London. If the western areas show the obligatory “brands” of London, such as Westminster Abbey (Collegiate Church of St. Peter), Buckingham Palace, the British Parliament, where officials meet, squares, streets and sculptures dedicated to the royal nobility, then the old City is a business center.

The London Stock Exchange, the Bank of England and the many ultra-modern skyscrapers like Norman Foster's Gherkin, where economic life is concentrated, deserve special attention, but this separate "state" also made room for legendary historical monuments such as St. Paul's Cathedral and Tower Bridge. And of course, you will not miss the opportunity to enjoy a walk along the beautiful Thames embankment and the procession of the royal horse guards in golden helmets.

Scotland Yard and famous London crimes

This is a non-trivial thematic walk through the places of service of the London police, which has successfully solved the most complicated crimes since the Middle Ages, and caught dangerous criminals from the organizers of terrorist attacks to serial killers.

In 3 hours you will have time to explore: the founding sites of the first professional detective team on Bow Street; three official police headquarters; London's oldest prison; establishments where criminals hid and organized murders, as well as details of the assassination attempt on the British Prime Minister and those close to Margaret Thatcher; eyewitness places to grim events. You should be prepared for the fact that children under 16 years of age are not recommended to be invited to this type of tour, as it contains many frightening details both in the guide’s stories and among the props.

Greenwich and the Pirate Pub on the East End Docks

The history of maritime Britain is connected with pirates and astronomers, shipwrecks and the slave trade, which the guide talks about so captivatingly that 5 hours flies by unnoticed. For £200 (for a group of up to 10 people) the National Maritime Museum will introduce you to the work of marine painters Turner and Reynolds; the invention of the English watchmaker Harrison, who was the first to create a chronometer; sailing ships; the history of the most famous naval battles, and, of course, with the exploits of Admiral Horatio Nelson, commander of the British fleet, who won the Battle of Trafalgar without losing a single ship.

And then, in the pirate pub “The Grape”, which is now owned by Ian McKellen, you can drink beer and take a photo with Gandalf’s staff from “The Lord of the Rings”.

Many Faces City

A leisurely 2.5-hour walk will take you through areas of London where ancient landmarks (the Roman Wall, Tower Hill, St. Olave's Church) intertwine with modern 21st-century buildings (The Gherkin, The Inside Out Building). Your acquaintance will begin with the history of the city during the Roman Empire, namely fragments of defensive walls built at the turn of the 2nd-3rd centuries, then you will move on to Tower Hill, where the humanist writer Thomas More was beheaded, and to the performance sites of the troupe of William Shakespeare himself.

The administrative center of Guildhall, the Bank of England, the oldest Leadenhall market, the favorite pub of Peter I, the locations where Harry Potter and James Bond were filmed are also mandatory points in this program. The highlight of this tour is the intriguing tales of a “killer skyscraper,” a sunken ship full of gold, and a Cambridge dropout whose portrait was fought over by pub owners more than 300 years ago. Gather a group of up to 15 people and you can get an unforgettable experience for £150.

Stonehenge and Bath in one day

A two-hour drive from London is one of the most mysterious monuments in Europe - Stonehenge. These are hewn stone blocks that are stacked vertically in the form of a circular fence. On top of the stones are huge monolithic slabs weighing several tons. Ancient buildings have stood on the English plain for more than four thousand years. The buildings are shrouded in the mysteries of their purpose and construction. There are many versions and legends according to which the authorship of the creations of Stonehenge is attributed to a wizard, the giant Cyclops, the Romans and even aliens. Apparently, sacrifices and ritual celebrations were held here to appease the gods.
