Story

Residential buildings in Naryn

Like many other Central Asian cities, Naryn arose as a small fortification on trade routes that led from East Turkestan () to Central Asia. Until the mid-19th century there was no city as such in this area. With the annexation of Central Asia to the Russian Empire in 1868, a Russian garrison was stationed here and from that moment the construction of the city began.

After the October Revolution of 1917, Naryn came under the control of the Red Army, but in 1920 there was a clash between Soviet troops and the White Guards. After bloody battles, the city was recaptured and Soviet power was established here. In 1927, Naryn became the administrative center of the then-established Naryn region.

The etymology of the city's name has not been fully studied. Previously, the city was under the influence of the Dzungar Khanate, and the name of the city from Kalmyk (Oirat), the language of the inhabitants of Dzungaria, sounds like “Nәrn” and is translated as “NARROW” “NARROW”, from the name of the narrow river “Nәrn” - narrow, which in sound, fits “NARYN” There is also an opinion that “Naryn/naaryn” in Central Asia is a designation for a dish made from crumbled horse meat. Perhaps in these places they prepared it well, especially since horse meat is a national product in Kyrgyzstan.

Today Naryn is the cultural and administrative center of the Naryn region and is located in the Naryn free economic zone. It is here that the head offices of state, private and public organizations of city and regional subordination, the consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, and the Torugart customs department are located.

Tourism

Of the cultural and educational objects, the most interesting are: the state university, the local history museum, the music and drama theater and the national theater “Manas Ruhu”.

Naryn River (in the vicinity of Naryn)

But of course, the main tourist interest is local attractions. In general, Naryn and the adjacent region have amazing tourism potential, because 70% of the local territories are mountains, so picturesque passes, wild mountain rivers, deep gorges, eternal snow and glaciers, stunning lakes and waterfalls, as well as an ancient unique culture make these places absolutely unique.

Naryn is the starting point for many tourist routes running through the Tien Shan mountains. From here, hunting tours for mountain ibex and Marco Polo argali are organized, as well as multi-day walking and horseback expeditions that go to the peaks.

Statue on the main square of Naryn

Perhaps the Naryn River is the main tourist attraction of the city, and it’s not even about the fabulous beauty of the coastal landscapes. Calm and leisurely on the plain, in the mountains she seems to go crazy. Swift and violent, it uncontrollably carries the white-foamy stream through the mountain gorges, resounding with its roar throughout the entire area. The river is the longed-for dream of those whose bodies need constant bursts of adrenaline. Rafting of all difficulty levels is what attracts extreme sports enthusiasts from all over the country and neighboring countries.

The rafting season on this unruly river runs from April to November, and the level of difficulty varies depending on the time of year. Experts advise rafting here in the most “stable” water - at the end of August and September.

For lovers of ecotourism, the vicinity of Naryn is a real paradise.

Naryn- a small town in central Kyrgyzstan with a population of 40 thousand people. Despite this, it has the status of a regional center, has its own theater, university and even a trolleybus! In terms of the presence of the “horned” one, Naryn can lay claim to two records at once: the highest altitude trolleybus (above 2000 m) and the smallest settlement with this exotic type of transport. I already wrote earlier about how we visited the trolleybus depot in Naryn , and today it seems it’s time to take a walk around the town itself.

Of the regional centers of the former USSR, Naryn is the second highest above sea level and second only to the Tajik Khorog located in the Pamirs. Due to the steep cliffs approaching from both sides, the city is 300-400 meters wide, but stretches along the river of the same name for as much as 15 kilometers. Among the architectural structures, it is worth noting the presence of a very beautiful and unusual mosque. The rest of the development is represented by three- to four-story panel buildings, Soviet administrative buildings and a powerful private sector. Like any other city in Kyrgyzstan, it is very poor here, but at the same time it is clean and, most importantly, safe.
Visitors to Naryn tour the mosque, ride a trolleybus and head further south to At-Bashy(mountain tourism) and Tashrabat(perhaps the main architectural landmark of the whole country). We took the whole daylight hours for a walk around the city.

We traveled to Naryn for half a day by minibus from Karakol (Przhevalsk) with an hour-long intermediate stop in Balykchi (Rybachye). Almost immediately we met the driver of the minibus, a young guy Sashka, and only, one might say, having started our journey from Issyk-Kul, we already decided on the issue of accommodation for the night. In his private house, Sashka rents out living rooms for visitors, so he offered us to live in one for half the price (after all, the season has not yet begun).
The road from Karakol to Naryn, half of which is on the coast of Issyk-Kul, and the second on winding mountain roads with passes up to 3000 meters, deserves a separate detailed description, because it is a real adventure. Someday I’ll try to reconstruct this path from memory in a separate post.

So, we arrived at the bus station of the regional center, where Sashka was supposed to drop off passengers, report on the trip, and then take us to the apartments, which were located exactly at the other end of the long and narrow city. For some reason I didn’t take a photo of the outside of the bus station, but please take a photo of the interior.

Among the authentic Soviet furnishings, the first thing that attracts attention is the table tennis table. I got the impression that this game is very popular in Kyrgyzstan: in the center of Bishkek I often saw young people (both boys and girls) playing tennis in public gardens and parks.

From the bus station, as planned, we went to check in with our new friend, but Sashka was in no hurry to go home: he kept slowing down here and there, explaining, showing... He was also aware that Perhaps the main reason we came to Naryn was their high-mountain trolleybus, so I decided to take us straight to the depot. The excursion turned out to be very useful and I repeat once again that you can read more about it at .

Of course, we also wanted to look at the Naryn River, one of the largest in the Tien Shan. The city just arose at the crossing point across Naryn on the trade road to Chinese Kashgar. Sashka satisfied this need of ours too.

In the spring season, the water in the river is very muddy

From Bishkek there are two entrances to Naryn: one is located near the bus station, but these “city gates” are located in the opposite part of the city

The river valley separates mountain ranges of different ages: on the left are the red-colored Paleogene-Quaternary mountains (younger), on the right are the Carboniferous-Permian mountains (older). I immediately remembered similar landscapes of the Turkmen Koytendag

In the end, our minibus driver Sashka, noticing that we were very interested in the natural component, suggested that we take a short walk by the river outside the city while he prepared our sleeping places. We, of course, agreed.

The strength of the water flow in the river can be judged by the size of the boulder pellets that it can/could transport. Once again I fall for the same trick - I collect pockets full of beautiful samples of pebbles, only to throw them away the whole way back. Wet pebbles from the beach, they are always beautiful, but when they dry out, they look like kamenyuka - nothing remarkable

But in this stream the water is absolutely clean - there is a spring here that locals go to on vacation

We returned to the city on foot and quickly found the house where we were to spend the night today. We took a little breath, changed clothes and set off for a more detailed inspection of Naryn.

Naryn State University located almost outside the city, very close to it we recently walked by the river

Monument Tailak-Batyru- one of the rulers of Kyrgyzstan in the 19th century. The road behind it just leads to the bridge over Naryn and to the “city gate” (visible in the background)

Police. So, everything is simple and without pathos)) Even in about this Central Asian trip of ours, I wrote that Kyrgyzstan is the freest and most democratic Central Asian country. You won’t be able to find a cop here during the day, no one will stop you or ask you to show documents, no one fools you with registrations and residence permits - complete freedom compared to neighboring Uzbekistan or even Kazakhstan

Small city park

I don’t know, maybe it was just my imagination, but I got the impression that for a town of 40,000 people there is somehow a disproportionate number of gas stations here. Moreover, they are all concentrated on a small section (1-1.5 km) of the central city Lenin Street. I definitely counted 6-7 pieces

There is a contact network, but trolleybuses do not run. It was on these days, when public holidays were approaching, that the horned one decided to arrange some kind of vacation. In short, we were unlucky here too - we didn’t take a ride around Naryn on a trolleybus.

We slowly walk towards the center, to which we still have about 5 kilometers to go

P regarding the level of knowledge of the Russian language by the local population and the number of Russian-language signs on shops and other establishments, Kyrgyzstan, perhaps, can be put in first place among the Central Asian republics.

Normal tolerable asphalt in the regional center lies only on the main street of Lenin; on all other streets the roads are unpaved. Actually, as I already said, two or three hundred meters away from the main street the city ends.

The history of the emergence of the city of Naryn is quite old. It was founded on the site of an ancient settlement that formed on the caravan road to Kashgar.

For lovers of ecotourism in the surrounding area Naryn a real paradise.

Lake Son-Kul- second largest natural reservoir in Kyrgyzstan, is located 90 km northwest of the city. It lies at an altitude of 3016 m above sea level, from October to June it is bound by a thick shell of ice. Best time to visit Son-Kul is the period from May to October, when shepherds with their flocks come to the local jailoos - high mountain meadows. During this period, tourists are accommodated in shepherd's yurts, which gives them an opportunity to get acquainted with the life of nomads; excursions are organized around the surroundings of the lake, rich in burial mounds and burial grounds, accompanied by shepherd guides who know these places better than anyone else. In July, folk art festivals are held annually on the coast, accompanied by equestrian games and competitions for the best preparation of national cuisine.

Another beautiful lake - Chatyr-Kul, is located on the territory of the region and is part of the must-see attractions of Naryn. It is located at an altitude of 3530 m above sea level near the pass Thorugard and is the third largest natural body of water in the country. The nature of the lake is rich and varied; suffice it to say that this territory is part of Karatal-Zhapyryk State Reserve.

Shores of Chatyr-Kul represent a beautiful relict forest consisting of Tien Shan blue spruce and Turkestan juniper, the lower layer of vegetation is represented by shrubs and medicinal herbs: sea buckthorn, ephedra, yarrow, St. John's wort, coltsfoot, valerian, etc.

The fauna of the coastal strip is rich and diverse; here you can find bears, wolves, snow leopards, mountain argali, foxes, and red marmots. The bird kingdom is represented by 60 species of waterbirds, of which Indian bar-headed geese, listed in the Red Book, and various species of ducks, for which Lake Chatyr-Kul is a favorite nesting place, are of particular interest.

And lovers of historical sights will not be disappointed trip to Naryn. They offer a visit historical and cultural zone, complex « Tash-Rabat", which includes two historical sites: Koshoy-Korgon settlement and actually, caravanserai Tash-Rabat.

Koshoi-Korgon ancient settlement is located 12 km from At-Bashi village, Naryn region, the ruins of the fort date back to the 7th-10th centuries AD. and according to legend are associated with the name Koshoy- dear uncle Manas, the hero of the epic of the same name. Legendary Koshoi erected a citadel on this site that protected the Kyrygyz from the destructive raids of the ancient Chinese. For more than 29 years, the fortress was an impregnable bastion on the path of enemies, until they destroyed the hero through treachery and betrayal.

Also incredibly interesting is the gallery of rock paintings, located 30 km from Kazarman village, in the tract Saimaluu-Tash. Tens of hectares of land contain thousands of petroglyphs, dating back to the 2nd century. BC - VIII century AD Rock paintings depict scenes of war and everyday life, hunting, rituals, magical signs and runes.

Also close to Kazarman The ancient settlement of the X-XII centuries has been preserved - a monument of the era of the Sakas and Usuns, surrounded by 5-meter burial mounds.

Tash-Rabat - medieval caravanserai, one of the few remarkably preserved monuments of that era. It is located 90 km from Naryn, not far from the village of At-Bashi, in a picturesque gorge Kara-Koyun. The monument dates back to the 15th century and was built on one of the busiest caravan routes from China V Europe.

This is the largest structure of that era, built of stone. However Tash-Rabat attracts not only its size and unusualness of the chosen building material. It was designed and built based on a clear symmetry of elements, a technique that was not at all inherent in the Eastern architecture of the Middle Ages.

Lost in a remote gorge, a huge and gloomy giant gives the impression of a military fortress, not an inn, which is quite justified in conditions of frequent attacks on trade caravans.

Tourism potential of Naryn and the area is truly limitless, everyone can choose a tour to their liking, have a wonderful rest, have fun and replenish their luggage with knowledge, of which, as we know, there is never too much!
